SPRING VALLEY, WI – Coming into play last week the Spring Valley boys’ basketball team had the chance to secure at least a tie for first place if not first place outright. All the team had to do was win both games against the other two teams vying for the same opportunity. In the end, it didn’t work out the way the Cardinals wanted to, dropping both games and falling to third place in the conference with a 10-3 mark. 17-6 overall record.

The Cardinals did earn a number three seed in the WIAA Regional bracket, meaning they will host a second round WIAA playoff game, facing the winner of the #6 McDonell Catholic vs. #11 Boyceville game played next Tuesday, February 27. The game in Spring Valley will be played on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. If the Cardinals win, they would face the winner of the #2 Cameron vs. #7 Shell Lake or #10 Colfax game on Saturday, March 2, in a location to be determined yet.

Elk Mound 66, Spring Valley 58
The Cardinals played well in the game, consistent throughout, shooting 45% in the game from the floor. The biggest difference was that Elk Mound shot better in the second half than in the first. Valley had forged a 29-22 halftime lead, but the Mounders outscored the Cardinals 44-29 in the second half for the win.
