BALDWIN, WI – During World War II a Blue Star in a home indicated that a son or daughter was away at war serving their country while a Gold Star indicated a family that lost a loved one in service.

In 1945, the National Garden Club (NGC) began a Blue Star and Gold Star Marker program to recognize the men and women who have served our country, and it has continued throughout the years.

As a NGC member, the Botany Belles and Beaus Garden Club (BBBGC) proposed installing a Blue Star Marker Memorial to recognize all who have and are serving our country to the Baldwin American Legion and Auxiliary Post 240 and a partnership was created.

After much planning, the groups are ready to move forward with the project. The memorial will be in Windmill Park and the Village of Baldwin is helping with the project. The memorial will include the Blue Star Marker, a raised planter, a sidewalk and surrounding patio area, a bench, and flagpole similar to the attached photo.

To personalize and help fund the memorial, the public has the opportunity to purchase an engraved brick honoring a veteran or an important person in their life. The bricks will be included in the sidewalk leading up to the memorial. Two sizes of bricks are available, a 4” x 8” for $100 or an 8” x 8” for $150. The That’s My Brick company located in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin supplies the bricks, and the first order goes in on July 1, 2024.

If you are interested in purchasing a memorial brick, this is the website: thatsmybrick.com/bbbgardenclub or brochures are available at the Baldwin American Legion Post 240 or contact Ruth Anderson (715-222-1248) for ordering information.

The goal is to have the Blue Star Marker memorial dedicated this fall.

MADISON, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is seeking public input on a proposed pavement improvement project on WIS 128 from WIS 72 in the Pierce County village of Elmwood to WIS 29 in the St. Croix County town of Cady.

    Attn.: Nick Pitsch

The pavement along this stretch of WIS 128 is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing to:

  • Recycle a portion of pavement on the 7.1 mile-stretch, overlay the recycled material with asphalt and place a chip seal and fog seal.
    • A chip seal is an asphalt surface treatment that consists of a layer of crushed stone placed on top of an application of liquid asphalt to reduce further deterioration of the pavement. A fog seal consists of applying an asphalt emulsion onto the pavement surface.
  • Complete chip and fog sealing on turn lanes.
  • Clean culverts of brush, mud and debris.
  • Complete other project work, including gravel shouldering, pavement marking, adding centerline rumble strips and restoring the site.

During construction, WIS 128 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter temporary single-lane closures controlled by flagging. Access to residences and businesses in the work zone will be maintained.

Construction currently is scheduled for 2026.

Submitted by Molly D. Flaten, WESTconsin Credit Union

WESTERN, WI To help aid those in our community facing food insecurity, the WESTconsin Credit Union Spring Food Drive will kick off on Monday, March 11, 2024, and run through Saturday, March 23. WESTconsin will accept donations of non-perishable food items in all offices. Additionally, monetary donations can be made at any WESTconsin office with a Member Service Representative or through drive-ups, or by calling the Service Center at (800) 924-0022. Proceeds will be distributed to 15 different community partners across western Wisconsin.

“Monetary donations are especially valuable because information shows food pantries have great buying power with monies available to them, and for every $1 in cash, they can purchase up to $10 worth of food,” says Stephanie Rasmussen, WESTconsin Credit Union Chief Experience Officer. “Last year, we raised nearly $2,400 and collected 1,564 non-perishable food items. That money allowed local pantries to buy nearly $24,000 worth of food for those in need. We are hopeful this upcoming food drive will make that same level of impact.”

WESTconsin Credit Union has been serving members since 1939, and membership is open to anyone who lives or works in the Wisconsin counties of Barron, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau, and Washburn, or the Minnesota counties of Anoka, Chisago, Dakota, Goodhue, Hennepin, Isanti, Pine, Ramsey, Scott, Wabasha, and Washington, with a $5 minimum deposit in a Membership Savings Account.

Credit unions are financial institutions owned by their accountholders, and member funds are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) up to at least $250,000.

‘Wandering Ewe Pub and Eatery’ holds Grand Opening

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The Wandering Ewe Pub and Eatery, formally known as longtime Spring Valley establishment of Sneaker’s Pub and Eatery, held their grand reopening under the new name on Friday, March 1. 2024.

After looking to add an addition to the facility, owner Heather Landin closed the doors in February of 2023 to begin the updates. This included finishing the addition, adding doors, a porch, and polishing the terrazzo floors. The extensive work required plumbing, electrical and heating work as well as HVAC additions to run the micron air filters installed in the space.

While originally planning to reopen in June of 2023, some delays made the construction take longer than expected.

CAMERON, WI – All good seasons must come to an end, and with the loss to Cameron last Saturday in the WIAA Regional Championship game shows, the winter sports season ended for Spring Valley.

The Cardinals earned their way to the championship game with a tight 53-46 win at home last Friday night against McDonell Central, but just couldn’t muster enough on Saturday to get past the Comets.

The squad finished the season with a 19-7 overall record, 11-3 in the Dunn-St. Croix conference. All-conference selections have not been announced yet, but Valley is sure to have a few players reach those honors.

‘Murder’s in the Heir’ is lethally funny

0
Detective Mike Davis and the heirs discussing who the murderer is. Photo by Kendall Vingua

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The Spring Valley Stagehands hit another home run with their spring production of “Murders in the Heir.” With a dangerously funny production, Director Lori Peterson and the cast of fourteen transport us to the Starkweather Mansion. With the family and staff gathered for the reading of billionaire Simon Starkweather’s (Michael Butts) will, two scheming women, Personal Secretary Kathy Collins (Edria Nyhus) and Lawyer Lois Van Zandt (Kelly Johnson) drop a bombshell on them all – after the night is over, the will becomes invalid, reducing the millions they all stood to inherit to just pennies.

With their future of millions on the line, the heirs and the staff are forced into a precarious position. As a storm rages on outside, at midnight the lights go out, a murder occurs and it’s anyone’s guess “who done it.”

The staff who stood to inherit one million dollars each are all suspects: Minerva (Ann Siegel) the feisty chef with a temper and a big knife, Nancy Pollard (Olivia Dumond) the fire poker wielding maid, Mrs. Trent (Sarah Erickson), the housekeeper, who finds herself faced with a moral dilemma, Bensonhurst (Matt Summers) the butler with a tiny wrench, Rufus Jones (Scott Thayer) the goofy handyman found with an axe in the house, or Miss Withers (Paula Knutson) the cranky nurse hired to tend to Mr. Starkweather.

Robert Hammer

0

Robert Geving Hammer, age 94, of Grantsburg, Wisconsin (WI), formerly of Clear Lake, WI was taken home to Heaven on February 22, 2024.

Robert was born April 14, 1929, in Gilman Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of four sons born to Arthur and Jessie (Geving) Hammer. He was baptized and confirmed in Gilman Lutheran Church near Spring Valley, WI. Robert attended the one-room Gilman Center School and Spring Valley High School. Following graduation in 1948, he worked at the home farm, other area farms, with Bjornstad Construction, and for Ofstie Construction in Iowa.

In February of 1951, he was inducted into the US Army. He received basic and advanced training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In November, his unit embarked for the Korean War, where he served on the front lines for ten months with the 623rd Field Artillery Battalion. He returned to the US in November and was honorably discharged December 30, 1952.

After returning home, Robert started working at Geving & Keehr Furniture and Funeral Home in Spring Valley. He also attended the WI State College at River Falls. In 1957, he graduated from the WI Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee, then returned to Spring Valley to work for another year.

Robert was united in marriage to Lorraine Ruth Johnson, on August 12, 1955, at Woodside Lutheran Church near Baldwin, WI.  This union was blessed with four children. In the spring of 1958, they bought a home in Clear Lake, WI. Robert, along with his brother Walter, purchased and operated Hammer Furniture and Funeral Service. In 1994, the funeral business was sold to Dave Scheuermann. Over the next several years, Robert continued to assist with funeral services.

The Clear Lake community was “home” for 56 years. Robert actively served his community on the Board of Education, Lions Club, Golf Club, Civic and Commerce Association, First Lutheran Church, and ambulance crew. He was a life member of VFW Post #5828 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter #52. His favorite pastimes included: deer hunting, Canada fishing trips, gardening, camping trips, woodworking, wood crafts, finding and polishing Lake Superior Agates, cutting firewood, walking in the woods, snowshoeing, and driving his John Deere tractor.

In the fall of 2014, failing health and multiple surgeries brought Robert to stay at the nursing home in Grantsburg, WI. Sharing a room with Lorraine, they had much time together and good daily care. Walks up and down the hallways, frequent naps in his recliner, visits from family and friends, occasional “road trips,” Milwaukee Brewers games, and Green Bay Packer games were all enjoyed over the years. On game days, he would be sitting right up close to his TV, wearing his favorite “Packers” sweatshirt. Robert passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024, at Burnett Medical Center’s Continuing Care Center.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; parents, Arthur and Jessie Hammer: three brothers, Phillip (Anne) Hammer, James (Norma) Hammer, and Walter (Molly, Audrey) Hammer.
