MADISON, WI – The Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA) recognized Melissa Meschke as the 2024 Andy Lisak Young Professional Award winner at the 2024 Governor’s Conference on Economic Development held in early February in Wisconsin Dells, WI. The prominent award, given every other year, was established in 1985 to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of economic development early in their career.

“WEDA is excited to recognize Melissa for her contributions, leadership, and achievements in the field of economic development. Her dedication to the profession and exceptional work to advance growth in her community and across Wisconsin this early in her career is highly commendable,” said Mary Perry, WEDA President and CEO. “The economic development profession can be challenging, and it is critical for Wisconsin to retain the best and the brightest, like Melissa, who will help shape the state’s economic future.”

Melissa currently serves as the Executive Director of St. Croix Economic Development Corporation, a dynamic countywide economic development organization that focuses on fostering local growth through business attraction and retention, workforce development, housing, and entrepreneurial development.

Prior to her work in St. Croix County, she served as the Economic Development Outreach Manager for the University of Wisconsin’s Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship and worked for several years driving small business development in central Wisconsin.

Meschke said, “I have been a part of the WEDA family for seven years and can say with full confidence that I would not be where I am today in my career without this incredible network of wonderful humans”. She continued, “I hope to be able to live up to Andy’s legacy as this year’s awardee.”

The Andy Lisak Young Professional Awrad was created by WEDA to acknowledge the rising stars of the economic development industry who are committed to meeting the economic challenges of today and positioning Wisconsin for a more successful tomorrow. The award is named after Andy Lisak, a former WEDA president and highly respected leader in Wisconsin’s economic development community who passed away in December 2020.

Schmitt falls just short in Sectional Wrestling tournament

EDGAR, WI – The path to Madison for wrestlers is alway paved with tough opponents and hard matches. Every wrestler wants to get there and will do whatever it takes to make it there. But what most people don’t see is the amount of work it takes to get there. It isn’t just practice in season, it’s the work put in outside of the season that makes the biggest impact.

Spring Valley/Elmwood freshman Sam Schmitt has been putting in the work, which was clear as he advanced from the WIAA regional meet to the sectionals.

It isn’t often that freshmen advance in the state tournament unless they have been putting in the work.

VILLAGE OF ELMWOOD, WI – The Village of Elmwood held their February monthly board meeting on Monday, February 12 at 7 p.m. Due to other events in the community and necessary absences, the meeting originally began in non-compliance due to the absence of a quorum of board members. Following the introduction, Trustee Unser was available and a quorum was established.

During the public input period, Mark Nyall, a GFL representative introduced himself to the Village Board. Following the switchover from P.I.G. to GFL last year, the company is the new garbage service contracted for village residents.

Next, Linda Garfield with the Elmwood Enrichment Council discussed a project they are hoping to complete in the upstairs area of the Elmwood Auditorium. The Elmwood Enrichment Council has allocated $1000 towards adding an enclosed closet in the upstairs area of the Auditorium. The project would include the supplies for the closet which would create a space for things like the floor scrubbing machine, dust mops and other cleaning supplies. It would also include the replacement of the tub sink.

VILLAGE OF ELMWOOD, WI – On a sunny, Sunday afternoon, the parking lot of Welcome Home Assisted Living was packed for a very special occasion – the 100th birthday celebration of Betty Larson.

Betty, who was dressed impeccably in light blue, waited at the door to greet her many guests as they entered. After greeting the guest of honor, there was lots of laughter and reminiscing over delicious chocolate cupcakes, hot coffee, and prosecco.

In May of 2023, when Betty was just 99, we sat down for an interview that was full of laughs and the witty personality she is so well known for.

Boys’ hoops drops tough pair, E-PC and WIAA tournament on horizon

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Coming into play last week the Spring Valley boys’ basketball team had the chance to secure at least a tie for first place if not first place outright. All the team had to do was win both games against the other two teams vying for the same opportunity. In the end, it didn’t work out the way the Cardinals wanted to, dropping both games and falling to third place in the conference with a 10-3 mark. 17-6 overall record.

The Cardinals did earn a number three seed in the WIAA Regional bracket, meaning they will host a second round WIAA playoff game, facing the winner of the #6 McDonell Catholic vs. #11 Boyceville game played next Tuesday, February 27. The game in Spring Valley will be played on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. If the Cardinals win, they would face the winner of the #2 Cameron vs. #7 Shell Lake or #10 Colfax game on Saturday, March 2, in a location to be determined yet.

Elk Mound 66, Spring Valley 58
The Cardinals played well in the game, consistent throughout, shooting 45% in the game from the floor. The biggest difference was that Elk Mound shot better in the second half than in the first. Valley had forged a 29-22 halftime lead, but the Mounders outscored the Cardinals 44-29 in the second half for the win.
