ELMWOOD, WI – The Elmwood Area Community Club held one of their two annual Euchre tournaments on Sunday, February 4. With beautiful weather and no football game to compete with, the historic Elmwood Auditorium was packed with thirty teams competing for several payouts totaling over $800. A $600 dollar pot was awarded to the first through fourth place teams, $195 for an optional loan hand pot, and the collected quarters on the table were given to the team with the lowest score.

Before playing, attendees were able to enjoy a delicious lunch provided by the community club of homemade chili, ham soup, Sailer’s brats and pulled pork, and the always present selection of bars – including lemon, pumpkin, banana and more.

Euchre, a popular card game in the Midwest since the early 1800’s, involves a team of four players. Players work together to win hands by taking the most tricks and earning points. The EACC tournament played a total of ten games, with teams moving after each game is played with eight hands. At the end of the tournament, teams turned in their scorecards for the best score from all ten games totaled.

With the scores tallied, the winners of the February Tournament were: 1st place: 40% payout of $240 – Bill Kelly and Dean Bergseng. 2nd place: 30% payout of $180 – Phil Husby and John Bates. 3rd place: 20% payout of $120 – Don Jensen and Scott Brahmer. 4th place: 10% payout of $60 – Tammy Jo Biles and Mark Gereats.

The most loan hands were tied for a pot of $195 by Bill Kelly and John Bates.  Lowest score won a total of $74 and was awarded to Jim and Tara Huebel.

The next Euchre tournament is scheduled for Sunday, March 10. The cost to participate is $20 per person, or $40 per team. There will be an all you can eat lunch buffet beginning at noon, with carry outs available for those who don’t want to play.

The tournament will begin at 1:00 p.m., with registration starting at noon. All proceeds from the Euchre tournament go to benefit the community; by providing UFO Days activities and equipment, sponsoring community events like the Easter Bunny and Santa days, and other fun, family friendly events.

BALDWIN-WOODVILLE, WI – Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. It’s a time to share what FFA is and the impact it has on members every day.

National FFA Week always runs from Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, George Washington’s birthday. This year, the week kicks off on Feb. 17 and culminates on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The National FFA Board of Directors designated the weeklong tradition, which began in 1948, recognizing Washington’s legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. A group of young farmers founded FFA in 1928, and the organization has been influencing generations that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting — it involves science, business and more.

The National FFA Organization is a school-based national youth leadership development organization of more than 945,000 student members as part of 9,163 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Baldwin-Woodville FFA will celebrate the week with dress up days: t-shirt day, Americana day, Western Wednesday, Carhart day, and Flannel Friday.  Activities planned for the week include hay bale toss, milk chugging, community libraries, ice cream treats to staff and students.

Baldwin-Woodville FFA currently has 100 members.  The B-W FFA participates in a variety of events such as speaking contests, livestock and dairy judging contests, officer retreat, state and national conventions, Fall Leadership Workshop, highway clean-up, county and state fairs, fruit sales, scholarships, and many more.  If you are interested in joining FFA please contact FFA Advisor Michelle Kamm at mkamm@bwsd.k12.wi.us.

Wrestling team finishes the regular season with tight win over Boyceville

BOYCEVILLE, WI – The young Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team wanted to finish their regular season on a winning note last week in order to prepare for the WIAA tournament this weekend.

The Cardinals got good luck in the drawing of weights and used the matchups to their advantage in a 42-30 win over Boyceville on the road here last week.

The teams drew a starting weight of 285 pounds and when Boyceville selected their wrestler for that weight the Cardinals quickly countered to try to take advantage of the weight class.

Girls’ squad drops pair on the road, Ducklow nearing 1,000 points

0

MONDOVI, WI – The Spring Valley girls’ basketball program is about to witness a historic milestone, this time from one of their own players.

Senior Mara Ducklow is on the verge of becoming the first player in the history of the girls’ program to break the 1,000-point barrier, but it will be an uphill battle this week against two of the toughest defensive teams in the conference in Elk Mound at home this past Tuesday and on the road at Durand tonight.

The Cardinals struggled in a pair of losses last week on the road to non-conference foe Osceola  and Mondovi. The pair of losses drop the Cardinals to 5-15 on the season, 5-6 in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference.

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The staff at the School District of Spring Valley are hosting their annual pancake supper on Tuesday, February 13, from 5-7 p.m. at Spring Valley High School.

For a free-will donation, you can enjoy pancakes, sausage, applesauce, and bars.  All proceeds benefit the Staff Scholarship given to deserving Senior students each year.  Last year, three $600 scholarships were awarded to 2023 Spring Valley High School graduates Phoebe Vodnik, Mattie Wilk and Trista Falde with the proceeds from this event.

“For a very small school, our scholarship donations are extremely impressive. We have an incredible and supportive community who continue to give back to our students every year,” said Sharla Bauer, SVHS School Counselor. “Traditionally, our pancake supper, put on by the SVHS staff, has raised enough money to give out at least two, sometimes three scholarships every year for students entering a two- or four-year school.”

In addition to the pancake supper, attendees can catch some Cardinal Basketball:

  • SVHS Girls Varsity plays Cumberland at 5:30 p.m. at Spring Valley High School
  • SVHS Boys Varsity plays Elk Mound at 7:15 p.m. at Spring Valley High School
  • SVHS Boys C Team and JV play Elk Mound at 5:15 p.m. at Spring Valley Elementary School

Cardinal boys’ hoops playing with determination in wins, taking it one game at a time

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – When wins don’t come easy, but they keep coming – it only helps teams get better. Having to work through adversity, struggle, find different ways to do it – that builds character for a team and brings them together.

The Spring Valley boys’ basketball team has been doing just that recently, even if the final scores don’t dictate that. The Cardinals are coming off a pair of wins in D-SC play that at the end look like easy wins, but in reality, were more difficult. The wins improved the Cardinals to 15-4 overall, 9-1 in the D-SC which currently has them tied for first place with Durand who lost to Elk Mound last week in overtime.

Valley had a non-conference tilt with Turtle Lake this past Monday and will travel to Mondovi tonight, where Cade Stasiek needs just two points to reach the 1,000-point plateau as a junior. The next week for the Cardinals will be huge as Valley will host Elk Mound on Tuesday, February 13 and then travel to Durand on Friday, February 16. The team will finish the regular season on Thursday, February 22 at Plum City against E-PC.
