BALDWIN AND HAMMOND, WI – In September 2023, The Wisconsin Department of Health and Human Services for Routine Immunization Community Engagement (RICE 2.0) grant program awarded the Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) Foundation $30,776 to initiate new programming that will provide migrant worker vaccine clinics and education.

“The RICE 2.0 grant will allow WWH to do outreach to a population that may not otherwise receive education or protection against common diseases that are preventable or lower risk with vaccinations,” Rosa Magnus, WWH Development Manager stated.

WWH plans to bring vaccine clinics and education to rural, Spanish speaking migrant workers in western Wisconsin that may otherwise go without vaccinations. On November 29, the team initiated the first clinic at Bomaz Farm in Hammond, Wisconsin. After registering with Irma Zwald, Medical Assistant and Interpreter, patients then visited with Dr. Katie Findlay for vaccine education and to ask questions in Spanish. Dr. Roloff then checked vitals and provided information on hypertension in Spanish. Christina Davis and Kristen Hiitola, Medical Assistants administered the actual vaccines and then all participants were given a meal made by Nilssen’s.

The WWH foundation is funding a portion of these efforts covering the actual vaccines and meals while the grant will help fund all supplies, employee hours and travel expense. The WWH RICE Team will offer a February and May clinic as well through the clinic in hopes of growing this offering. Vaccinations administered on November 29 included the following:

  • 3 Pediatric COVID shots.
  • 23 COVID shots
  • 19 Flu shots
  • 11 Tetanus shots
  • 1 Hepatitis A shot.

The team also addressed questions around smoking cessation and symptoms.

By bringing the vaccines and education to the migrant workers and their families, WWH hopes to remove barriers, build trust, and provide the opportunity to build long lasting healthcare partnerships.

WWH is committed to providing as many holistic services as possible for physical, mental, and social health and wellbeing through ongoing partnerships, new and established. This initiative will serve as the beginning of those efforts for a population that has gone without or not enough for far too long. The WWH RICE Team is proud to be part of this effort and making these connections with our Spanish speaking community members.

We are building a healthier tomorrow together for all.

SV Chamber honors Dr. Gary Lukes with Christmas tree lighting

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The weather was typical for an afternoon in early December with some flurries of wet snow but, that didn’t stop some people from coming out for the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce “Shop Spring Valley” event last Saturday, December 9, 2023. Many people also came out despite the weather for the ceremonial Christmas Tree Lighting that followed “Shop Spring Valley.” Retired optometrist Dr. Gary Lukes was honored by the Spring Valley Chamber as the first person to light the Spring Valley Christmas Tree in what is hoped to be an annual holiday happening along with the “Shop Spring Valley” event.

Dr. Lukes was chosen for this honor because of his nearly 40 years of experience caring for the eyes of the area’s people and his many contributions to the community, such as his decades of commitment to the Stagehands Theatre community theater group and his serving for years in the Spring Valley Lions Club among other things.

Prior to lighting the nice 12-foot balsam fir Christmas tree donated from the Rush River Tree Farm in Maiden Rock, erected and gaily decorated by the volunteer members of the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce, people gathered for some entertainment.

Boys’ basketball team improves in non-conference games

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Playing a tough non-conference schedule is a difficult decision for coaches. They ask themselves if playing tough teams is good or bad for their teams’ development, especially if it means losing.

The Spring Valley boys’ basketball team tends to play a tough non-conference schedule to try to set themselves up for success in conference play. Their win last week in the Dunn-St. Croix conference opener showed the results of that schedule.

Currently, Valley sits with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-0 conference mark with a pair of games against D-SC foes Glenwood City this past Tuesday and at Colfax Friday night. The team will then have a break before hosting Somerset on Thursday, December 21, 2023. The Cardinals will then play Pardeeville at JustAGame Fieldhouse on December 29 with another game the next day against a team to be determined.

WOODVILLE, WI – Bidding for the Woodville Historical Society’s Silent Auction fundraiser baskets ended on Friday, December 8, 2023, and the lucky winners picked up their goodies that Friday evening and Saturday morning. The Historical Society had the popular Norwegian treat, Lefsa for the holidays was also available for purchase as part of the fundraising for the Society. Thank you to all who participated!

The eighteen-fundraiser Silent Auction baskets were compiled by Woodville Historical Society’s Sue Lohmeier and featured a wide range of items suitable for youngsters, families, and adults. This year bidding was online, so people received automatic notifications if they were outbid.

The money raised from the Silent Auction supports the Woodville Historical Society in its mission to locate, collect, preserve, and exhibit materials and information that tells the history of Woodville, Wisconsin. Funds also help with the bills associated with maintaining the Woodville Historical Society’s building (next to the Woodville Library on Main Street). Box 162, Woodville, WI 54028 or donate online through a link on the Woodville Historical Society Facebook page.

Girls’ hoops team wins pair of D-SC games for first wins of season

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Home cooking is always good for struggling teams and the Spring Valley girls’ basketball team needed some home cooking.

The Cardinals were coming off a devastating loss last Saturday in Colfax against Bloomer where they were clearly overmatched. With conference play starting, Valley needed to get some confidence back, and notch their first win of the season. Boyceville and Glenwood City were the teams on tap for the team this week and the Cardinals were able to put things together for a pair of wins.

The Cardinals now sit with a 2-5 overall record and a 2-0 mark in Dunn-St. Croix conference play. The team has a little bit of a break as their next game is tonight in Colfax and then followed by a home game against Mondovi on Tuesday, December 19. The team then won’t play again until December 27 and 28 in Clayton for a holiday tournament.
