ELMWOOD, WI – The newest history center location of the Pierce County Historical Association (PCHA) is now open for visitors in downtown Elmwood, Wisconsin. The new location, whose lease was officially signed on August 1, 2023, was a longtime coming said PCHA Secretary Julie Huebel.

“For a couple of years now we have been looking at expanding. We have our main office in Bay City, and one in Prescott that serves the Prescott Chapter of the PCHA. Having an office in this area geographically made sense for us to have representation on both sides of the county.

“We will be opening this as a satellite office to our main one in Bay City. We feel this will allow us to better serve the community in terms of proximity to their areas and it will also allow us to tap into a wider network of volunteers that spans the entire county. Additionally, we were in dire need of more space to house our collections and the eastern side of the county provided the most economical option for our organization.”

Girls’ hoops team drops close game to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser

0

CHETEK, WI – If there is one thing that Spring Valley Head Coach Sean Hoolihan has stressed to his players over the years, it’s to play hard to the final buzzer, regardless of the score.

That mentality showed here last Tuesday as the Cardinals came up short at the end but clawed back into the game after being down by 13 late in the second half. Chetek-Weyerhaeuser held on for the 37-33 win over Valley, keeping the Cardinals winless on the season.

The loss drops Valley to 0-2 on the season with three non-conference games this week and two D-SC games next week, all at home. The Cardinals hosted Clear Lake this past Tuesday and will have games Friday and Saturday against Alma/Pepin and Bloomer respectively. Saturday’s game is at 1:45 in Colfax. The Cardinals also host Boyceville on Tuesday, December 5, and Glenwood City on Friday, December 8 to begin the conference schedule.

BALDWIN, WI – Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) was proud to join communities across America in celebration of National Rural Health Day (NRHD) on November 16, 2023. The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) and rural-focused organizations throughout the United States set aside the third Thursday of November to recognize NRHD. This annual event is an opportunity to celebrate the “Power of Rural” and honor the individuals and organizations dedicated to addressing the unique healthcare needs of nearly 61 million people living in rural America.

“It is of vital importance that we ensure all rural Wisconsin communities have the opportunity to be healthy and have access to affordable, quality health care regardless of where they call home,” said Eilidh Pederson, CEO of Western Wisconsin Health. “We are proud to recognize the incredible work of health professionals and volunteers in our community on National Rural Health Day and throughout the year.”

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, WWH was honored to recognize two employees with National Rural Health Day Hero Awards.

The first WWH Award recipient is Dr. Kathleen Findlay. Dr. Findlay embodies the focus of WWH’s mission of “Building a Healthier Tomorrow, Together,” in the creation of a program that prioritizes health and wellness. The innovative ‘Simple Health’ program is a lifestyle medicine model. This model includes a dedicated team of professionals, meeting patients where they are and provides a lifestyle road map to patients to take ownership of their health.

This program focuses on holistic wellness, nutrition optimization, physical activity, social connection, and purpose. This program is at the heart of preventive medicine and is a leading example in the health care industry of how population health should be delivered. Dr. Findlay has also played an integral role in the development and delivery of the upcoming WWH bariatric and medical weight loss program. This innovative program allows an important access point to patients with critical needs and no place locally to receive such care. Dr. Findlay provides excellent patient care with high patient satisfaction scores. She delivers the personal touch, knowledge, and engagement to create positive outcomes for patients. She serves as an officer of our Medical Executive Committee and as a physician champion on our health equity committee in the pursuit of providing equitable healthcare to all we serve.

The second recipient of the National Rural Health Day Hero is Cora Meyer, Registered Nurse Pediatrics.  Cora is the definition of a dedicated, compassionate, knowledgeable team player at WWH. She has been recognized by fellow co-workers’ multiple times because of her efforts taken to care for her patients. She took it upon herself to make a public service announcement video about tick safety earlier this summer, she steps in to help answer vaccine questions as needed and is supportive to her coworkers and patients; even taking the time to help with wound care and going above and beyond to follow up with hospital patients after her clinic shift was done. WWH is extremely fortunate to have Cora as part of our team.

Western Wisconsin Health is honored to have National Rural Health Day Heros Dr. Findlay and Cora Meyer on the team that continues to redefine rural healthcare by “Building a Healthier Tomorrow, Together.”

SPRING VALLEY, WI – It was a fun and exciting moment last Friday afternoon, November 17, 2023, as members of the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Spring Valley Golf Course (SVGC) to cut the ribbon for the Grand Opening of “The Flatstick” restaurant and bar. Owners Bob and Kathy Rupakus, who bought the SVGC four years ago, have been planning this great addition to their business ever since. Now the day finally arrived with the first meal being served at a traditional Wisconsin “Friday Fish Fry.” The bar was opened as well, and a featured drink was “The Flatstick Old Fashioned.” It is definitely worth trying!

60 guests had made reservations for the first dinner at The Flatstick. In addition to two or three pieces of baked or fried cod, the dinner guests would have choices from the extensive salad bar and warm side dishes such as au gratin or baked potatoes along with tasty Mac and cheese and more.

The Sun-Argus got the chance to talk with Bob and Kathy after the Chamber Ribbon Cutting and before they planned to have dinner with family and spend some time going around the tables and greeting their guests, as perfect hosts in their new restaurant.
