NEW RICHMOND, WI – The Cancer Center of Western Wisconsin (CCWW) was awarded the 2023 Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative’s Collaboration Award, which honors organizations that have demonstrated effective teamwork while advancing cancer control goals.

The CCWW is a unique cooperative relationship between six community-based critical access hospitals in western Wisconsin, including Amery Hospital & Clinic, Hudson Hospital & Clinic and Westfields Hospital & Clinic – all part of HealthPartners – along with Osceola Medical Center, St. Croix Health and Western Wisconsin Health, which are independent rural hospitals.

Prior to 2011, cancer patients in western Wisconsin were traveling significant distances for treatment since none of the local hospitals could afford to provide radiation therapy on their own. But by working cooperatively and not competitively, the six hospitals were able to form a jointly owned, world-class cancer treatment center to serve residents of western Wisconsin.

The CCWW works to improve cancer awareness and education, increase cancer screenings and early detection and coordinate cancer treatment and survivorship services for patients. They also offer genetic counseling services to help families learn about hereditary cancer risks, along with clinical trial opportunities to assist in the development of new ways to prevent and treat cancer. All six locations have helped increase access to quality healthcare, especially for those at higher risk of health-related inequities in outlying areas of the region.

“The CCWW is honored to be recognized for working to improve health outcomes in Wisconsin,” says Steve Massey, president and CEO of the CCWW and Westfields Hospital & Clinic. “Our oncology care program models the benefits of a collaborative approach for cancer services. Together, we can do what is best for patients and reduce the burden of cancer.”

The CCWW accepted their award on November 2, 2023, during a ceremony at the Wisconsin Cancer Summit in the Wisconsin Dells.

BALDWIN-WOODVILLE, WI – The Baldwin–Woodville (B-W) Blackhawk football season ended last week in Arcadia. The Blackhawks fell just one win away from advancing to the State Championship level in their loss to the Lodi Blue Devils, 49-29. Although the Blackhawks fell short of State, there are many successes to recognize from the season. Recently, I spoke with B-W head football coach Dan Keefer to reflect on the 2023 football season and seniors.

Baldwin-Woodville opened the season with two nonconference wins against Kewaskum and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau.

“It was a nice, fast start, to our season,” said Keefer.

WOODVILLE, WI – The Woodville American Legion Post 301 was nicely crowded last Friday night, November 3, 2023, to help Woodville native John Terkelsen celebrate his 90th birthday. The Legion hosted John and his musical friends as they played good time music for three hours with John singing with his beautiful deep voice and leading the band on guitar. All in all, there were 10 or so guys on and off that sat in on the birthday gig for Johnnie T.

John Terkelsen was raised on a dairy farm in rural Cady Township with one brother, Hanley. He graduated from Woodville High School in 1951. After high school John served two years in the Army stateside. In the Signal Corp he was trained to be a switchboard operator, although he said that he never really did that. He did many other things such as installing a public address system at the firing range, driving truck, doing KP, and guard duty.

In May of 1954 John married the lovely Rachel VanDien of Baldwin. Their marriage of 65 years was blessed with four children, Sheryl, Sue, Julie and John Jr.

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Staying Put, the local non-profit dedicated to helping seniors “stay put” in their homes, offered a fun Halloween party on the morning of Tuesday, October 31, 2023.

Seniors were invited to dress up and visit the Staying Put office for a spooky coffee clutch and other fun activities including hot apple cider, treats, a showing of the movie “Beetlejuice” and a Halloween mad-lib. Ten volunteers and clients attended the event, followed by an evening of the staff greeting over twenty trick and treaters who ventured up and down McKay Avenue.

Kendall Vingua, Advancement Director said, “The idea was to do something that would be fun – for both clients and volunteers, while reminding the community that we are here. While we haven’t always had holiday themed events before, it’s a great way to treat our clients and volunteers, while also letting the community learn more about our organization.”
