SPRING VALLEY, WI – When you reach the top of the mountain, you get the honors and the Spring Valley volleyball team did that by winning the conference title. Now they get to reap the rewards of their hard work with post season honors.

Leading the way for Valley were a pair of first team senior honorees – Mara Ducklow and Charli Vanasse.

Ducklow led the Cardinals and was given the honor as the Conference Player of the Year for her efforts. The senior led the conference in attacks and kills for the season. She had 258 kills in 713 attacks with 95 errors, which led the team as well. Ducklow was also second in the conference in digs, with 371 defensive plays, and was third in the conference in service aces.

BALDWIN, WI – On October 4, 2023, the Andersen Corporate Foundation sent word to the Western Wisconsin Health Foundation that a $30,000 grant would be awarded to the Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) Obstetrical and Medical-Surgical Unit expansion.

The mission of the Andersen Corporate Foundation is to improve lives and strengthen communities where Andersen employees live and work. It has donated more than $60 million while supporting nonprofit organizations in housing, healthcare, hunger relief, and education. The Andersen Corporate Foundation supported WWH with $40,000 for the new facility back in 2015.

“The Andersen Corporate Foundation has been so supportive to our community, and this allows WWH to continue to grow and provide for our patients, near and far,” Rosa Magnus, WWH Development Manager stated.

With recent birth center closures in the immediate area, Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) has seen a significant increase in birthrates over the last year with 276 total births in 2022. In addition, there has been an ever-increasing hospitalization rate pushing WWH to its capacity and even having to make the difficult choice of sending patients to Twin Cities hospitals.

To address WWH’s growing needs for inpatient services, a hospital expansion began in August 2023 and will add four rooms to the medical-surgical wing and three rooms to the birth center wing. Upon completion, Western Wisconsin Health will have a total of 22 rooms (three unfinished) to provide additional access to care for patients in our community to keep them close to home and to take away barriers.

This expansion will allow WWH to provide the best patient care to a broader spectrum of our service area. Although very costly, WWH realizes this expansion is the right thing to do for local patients; and with that sentiment the WWH foundation along with a committee of WWH leaders has been applying for multiple grant opportunities.

HAMMOND, WI – The #4 seeded Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks conquered the #1 seeded St. Croix Central Panthers (SCC) in a commanding fashion, 46-29, for level two of the 2023 Division 4 WIAA Football Tournament. Passionate and resilient play by the Blackhawks led to Baldwin-Woodville’s victory in a action packed rematch of two Middle Border Conference teams; avenging the Blackhawks week-eight loss, 54-21, to the Panthers.

SCC opened the game struggling to move the ball. The Panthers punted and Baldwin-Woodville began at their own 37-yardline. The Blackhawks hit the ground running with a solid quarterback keeper run by Cal Smith and a long pass reception by Collin Fritts. The Blackhawks struck first to take the lead 7-0, with a rushing touchdown by Colton Hush and a successful point-after by Gus Kroening. Baldwin-Woodville scored immediately after on SCC’s next offensive possession with a defensive 28-yard fumble return ‘scoop-and-score’ touchdown by Ryan Veenendall, 14-0. SCC punted on their following drive continuing to be challenged by the Blackhawk defense. Smith and the rest of the Baldwin-Woodville offense shined through the air moving 67-yards downfield in only a few plays and adding to the lead with a Hush receiving touchdown, 21-0. SCC responded with a 72-yard rushing touchdown and another short-yardage touchdown to end the first quarter, 21-14.

SCC kicked off to Baldwin-Woodville, however a Blackhawk fumble gave the Panthers possession. The Panthers offense moved towards the endzone but hindered by penalties and Baldwin-Woodville’s defense turned the ball over to the Blackhawks. This gave Baldwin-Woodville possession from their own 1-yardline. A ‘holding in the endzone’ penalty against the Blackhawks awarded SCC a safety, 21-16. SCC methodically advanced across the field on their next drive to take the lead, 22-21. SCC’s two-point conversion was no good. The Blackhawks answered, reclaiming the lead with a 69-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Monicken at the end of the first half, 27-22. The Blackhawks two-point conversion was also unsuccessful.

22nd Annual Woodville Halloween Festival report

WOODVILLE, WI – Here is the report on the 22nd Annual Woodville Halloween Festival that was held last Saturday, October 28, 2023. There was a killing frost on the ground in Woodville, Wisconsin the morning of the 28th and that may have scared some kids and their families away from attending this fun annual Halloween Festival event.

That certainly was a sharp contrast from the warm weather of 2022 for the 21st Annual Woodville Halloween Festival where the costume contest was held outside. Not so this year. But despite the chilly start to the day, it was warm and enchanting inside the United Fire and Rescue – Woodville Station for the 2023 22nd Annual Halloween Festival that went from noon to 3:00 p.m.

According to Diane Gedatus, Childcare Director at Kids View Childcare at Park View who is also the lead coordinator for the St. Croix Area Volunteer League who puts on the Annual Woodville Halloween Festival that the attendance this year was down considerably from past years. The St. Croix Area Volunteer League also puts on Santa’s Workshop in Woodville that will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lion’s Den. The Volunteer League also organizes the Annual Woodville Easter Egg Hunt in the Spring too. They are always welcoming more volunteers to join them in providing so much joy to the area children. Give Diane a call if you are interested in joining the Volunteer League.

Cards’ football season ends in Boyceville

0

BOYCEVILLE, WI – The final game of the season is never easy. It’s messy, emotional, usually cold. Most teams finish their season disappointed with their record or the outcome of their final game.

While it wasn’t the season the Spring Valley football team was hoping to have, there were a lot of pluses to take away.

Boyceville, which is having an incredible season, ended the Cardinals hopes of advancing to Level 3 playoff action by shutting out the Cardinals 30-0 here last Friday, October 27, bringing the 2023 football season to a close.

Successful Volleyball season ends with loss to Regis in WIAA playoffs

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – It was a bittersweet week for the Spring Valley volleyball team. The D-SC champions earned the right to host both playoff games this past week, unfortunately their season ended earlier than hoped for with a loss to Regis in the second round.

The loss may have dampened the season, but the team should be proud of all of their accomplishments this year, especially earning the D-SC title.

Valley started the week with a 3-0 win over Blair-Taylor. The sweep of the Wildcats by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-14, was led by the senior attack of Mara Ducklow and Charli Vanasse. Vanasse led Valley with 14 kills and Ducklow had 11. The team had 38 kills in 94 attacks with 16 errors. Sophomore Addison Nelson assisted on 32 kills.

WOODVILLE, WI – The new floor in the Village of Woodville Steven Park shelter is dazzling thanks to a donation to the Village of Woodville, Public Works Department by the Woodville Lions Club that was installed by Blackhawk Garage Door.

The concrete flooring under the picnic tables was starting to deteriorate and needed rehabilitation. Public Works Department director Brent Knegendorf researched what the options for the crumbling, pitted surface would be and ultimately contacted Blackhawk Garage Door of Baldwin, Wisconsin and Bloomington, Minnesota, that offers a swell garage floor resurfacing system. The cost was something that he realized the Woodville Lions Club might consider helping with.

The system that Blackhawk Garage Door offers is Polyurea floor coating. This system allows for extending the concrete surface life to be extended rather than replacing or painting the surface.
