Blackhawk football prevails over Prescott

PRESCOTT, WI – The Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks soared past the Prescott Cardinals, 35-7, in week-seven of the 2023 football season. Baldwin-Woodville’s persistent play led to a brisk Blackhawk victory.

Baldwin-Woodville kicked off to Prescott to open the game. The Cardinal’s offense advanced the ball downfield methodically but was stopped short of scoring by Blackhawk defensive back Colton Hush; intercepting a Cardinal pass at the Baldwin-Woodville eight-yardline. Baldwin-Woodville capitalized soon after with a burst of speed; a 68-yard rushing touchdown by Gavin Sell, 7-0. Both teams punted on their next possessions. The Cardinals, pressured by Baldwin-Woodville’s defense, punted once more. The Blackhawk’s offense struck again on an 11-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Cal Smith to Ryan Veenendall to end the first quarter, 14-0.

Prescott struggled to move the ball on their first drive of the second quarter. Baldwin-Woodville’s defensive pressure forced the Cardinals to throw another interception to Hush. The Blackhawks took possession at their own 5-yardline and went to work right away utilizing their tempo offense. Baldwin-Woodville added to their lead with a Smith to Sell 44-yard touchdown through the air, 21-0.

Cross Country team shows well at home meet, Amery next as season is winding down

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Having the chance to run a meet on your own home course is always a plus for cross country teams. The Spring Valley squads got that opportunity here last week, running their home meet for the first time in a few years on their practice course right here on campus.

The results were mixed, as some runners continue to drop times as the season progresses. The teams are now heading into the home stretch of the season as they ran at Amery this past Tuesday (results were not available as of press time) and will compete at the D-SC conference meet in Durand next Thursday, October 12, 2023, before running at the WIAA Sectional on Saturday, October 21, in Cadott at Whispering Pines Golf Course.

The teams will keep working hard in the meantime to drop their times and get healthy for those meets.

Volleyball squad moves into first place following week of matches

SPRING VALLEY, WI – In what was expected to be a very tough week of competition for the Spring Valley volleyball team, everything turned out just right for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals swept a pair of conference matches against two other unbeaten teams to capture first place outright and remain undefeated in conference play with 15-5 overall record and 4-1 conference mark.

The Cardinals travel to Durand to square off with the 3-1 Panthers tonight, then finish the regular season next week with matches at E-PC (Elmwood-Plum City) on Tuesday and the regular season finale at home against Boyceville on October 12, 2023.

Hornets sting Cardinals 16-8, Valley tries to rebound tomorrow at E-PC

CADOTT, WI – When you are standing on top of the hill, everyone wants to knock you off. That’s been the case for the Spring Valley football team over the past decade – always vying for a conference title. Of course, that means every team you play is going to give you everything they’ve got.

Well, the fifth ranked Cardinals got all they could handle here last Friday, September 29, 2023, from a physical Cadott team and came out of the game on the short end of the scoreboard for the first time this year, 16-8 for the Cadott Hornets on their homecoming night.

“We didn’t do a good job of handling their physical play the other night,” said Head Coach Ryan Kapping. “The best way to overcome that is by executing what you normally do at a high level and we did not do that.  Cadott played a tremendous game so credit to them.”

BALDWIN, WI – Peace, Love and Chili Fest has come to a close and fortunately, the rain held off and the weather was perfect for tasting all the different chili’s presented this year. We hit the groove and a “Groovy” time was had by all.  It is quite something to see how this event comes together.  The Baldwin-Woodville Chamber Board begins preparing in the spring, local sponsors rally their support, and somehow this fabulous 4-hour event is a “must attend” for visitors near and far.

This year, we had 30 Chili Booth Participants all hoping their chili would win over the judges and the voters.  This year, People’s Choice Best Chili 1st Place was awarded to Seek Careers Staffing. 2nd place was Baldwin Royalty, and 3rd place was Western Wisconsin Health. The Judge’s Choice Best Chili 1st Place was awarded to Baldwin Perk. 2nd place was North Meets South, and 3rd place was Rancho Loco. One aspect of the Chili Fest is certainly the fun had by the booth participants hoping to win Best Decorated Booth. By Community Vote, Best Decorated Booth, 1st Place was awarded to Adoray Home Health & Hospice. 2nd Place Homestead Veterinary Clinic and 3rd Place to State Farm.

Our popular Mascot Race was well attended this year. We had eight entries from our local businesses and each of them spent a little extra time preparing for the competition. Several videos were shared with our Chamber and posted on our Facebook page, they were definitely fun and creative. Taking the win for the first heat was WESTconsin Credit Union’s, Finn Lee. Our 2nd heat was won by Pillar Pete, from Pillar Bank.

Chili Fest would not be possible without the sponsors, volunteers, vendors, community organizations, main street businesses, public works, emergency personnel, and attendees, “THANK YOU ALL!”

The Baldwin-Woodville Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to represent the best of our communities and are so thankful for the support as it allows us to continue promoting our community businesses through Coffee’s On and Business After 5, scholarships, and other events such as Trick or Treat on Main Street, Annual Horse Parade, Business Expo and so much more. If you would like more information about joining the Baldwin-Woodville Area Chamber of Commerce, please email us at bwchamberofcommerce@gmail.com.

Save the Date! Chili Fest 2024 will be held on September 28.

ELLSWORTH, WI – The third annual “Powered by Electricity” four-hour (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) event was held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at UW–River Falls North Hall parking lot.  Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services (PPCS), St. Croix Electric Cooperative (SCEC), the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Office of Sustainability, and Hope for Creation, co-sponsored this National Drive Electric Week event that provided fun for all ages. Grownups got to play with the big toys taking three different models of electric vehicles (EVs) for test drives: a Chevy Bolt, Ford F150 Lightning, and Tesla Model S. Younger attendees were treated to bucket truck rides, yard games, and activities from the River Falls Library. The weather was a bit warm, but that didn’t stop many people from attending “Powered by Electricity” again this year.

The event included presentations by industry experts on the topics of solar installations, available rebates, and the EPA’s electric bus program. In addition to the EV showcase, there were two moderated roundtables with EV drivers discussing their experiences.

One of those participants was Dave Sowatzke of rural Spring Valley, Wisconsin, who was on hand with his 2016 Model S Tesla to answer questions and share his EV experiences.

“I love it!” he said emphatically. Sowatzke reported that he has the small battery package that gives him a range of about 220 miles per full charge. He does the charging primarily at home in about seven hours. Dave chose to buy an EV out of environmental concerns.

The EV showcase included Tesla models S, 3, X, and Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E’s, F150 Lightning, and Transit Van; Chevy Bolt and Bolt EUV; Rivian R1T and R1S; Hyundai Kona, Kia EV6; and Volvo C40. PPCS member Robert Hanson also brought an electric tractor and motorcycle to share in the showcase.

There were also electric bicycles to try as people could cruise around in the large UW-RF parking lot.

“Collaborating with SCEC, UW-River Falls, and Hope for Creation has enabled us to expand this event each year,” said David Chavie, PPCS manager of energy innovation and operational technology. “As more electric vehicles, tools, and equipment become available, we’re proud to be able to host an event to showcase all these technologies.”

There were brats, hotdogs and vegan chili available as a fundraiser for the St. Croix Valley Sexual Assault Team that serves five counties with 24/7 comprehensive sexual assault service (SART).

Door prizes were drawn every 20 minutes with grand prize drawings held at the end of the event.  The grand prizes were an EGO Power+ 16″ Chain Saw Kit (SCEC members only), a DeWalt 2X20V MAX 21.5” Brushless Cordless Push Mower (PPCS members only), and an EGO Power+ 21” Single State Snow Blower Kit (public).

Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services is an electric cooperative located in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, offering electric utility services to homes and businesses. As a Touchstone Energy Cooperative, Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services is committed to excellence, innovation, and integrity, and is dedicated to helping its communities live better.

St. Croix Electric Cooperative (SCEC) was incorporated on Nov. 5, 1937, as a result of five farmers, who were determined to bring electricity to rural St. Croix County, Wis. On May 24, 1939, electricity was delivered to the first account. Today, the Cooperative operates nearly 1,780 miles of distribution lines that serve more than 11,000 member accounts in rural St. Croix and portions of surrounding counties. SCEC strives to positively impact its community through Commitment to Community grants, scholarships, and offering members rebates and solutions to conserve energy. Information is shared with members through the April annual meeting; “Energy Lifestyles Magazine”; online at scecnet.net; and via social media.

Look for the fourth annual “Powered by Electricity” next year about this same time.
