Mary Ellen Schmitz

0

Mary Ellen Schmitz, our mother, mother-in-law, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Comforts of Home in Menomonie with her family by her side.  She was 96 years old.

Mom was born on March 23, 1928, to Maurice and Lillian (Blystad) Coughlin in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  She was the sister of Donald, Bernard, Helen, Ambrose, Jane, Jack, Richard, and Sally.  Mom graduated from Aquinas High School in La Crosse in 1946.  After graduating, she performed secretarial work at Allis-Chalmers and worked as a bookkeeper at Conrad’s Retail Fur Store in La Crosse until she married Donald Schmitz on December 26,1953 at St. James Catholic Church in La Crosse.  We often kidded her about planning her wedding for the day after Christmas.  Our parents were married for 65 years.

After our parents were married, they lived in Readstown, Wisconsin, for seven years.  During those years, their first four children were born, Cindy, Debbie, Steve, and Tom. Their family moved to Elmwood, Wisconsin, in July 1960. Three more children were added to their family, Fred, Nancy, and David.  In July 2019, Dad and Mom moved to the Comforts of Home Assisted-Living Facility in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

While her children and grandchildren were growing up, Mom enjoyed attending their concerts, sporting events, First Communions, Confirmations, and graduations.  She, especially, loved the Christmas concerts that the elementary school held.  Over the years, Mom enjoyed attending her high school class reunions at Aquinas.  For many years, Mom and Neva Krook, golfed early on weekday mornings at the Spring Valley Golf Course.  She said they wanted to be done with their round of golf before “the good golfers” arrived!  When she was 55 years old, she took and passed swimming lessons.  Scrabble was a favorite game of Mom’s so she would “rope in” anyone she could when they came to visit.  We don’t think anyone in our family ever beat her (she wouldn’t even let the grandkids win),

Mom and Dad attended Sunday Mass along with daily Mass at their parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood.  She said it was a wonderful way to start their day.  Her favorite spot to vacation was Treasure Island, Florida, where she met many women that she still corresponded with even after the trip became too difficult to drive. They also made many trips to Mesquite, Nevada, and would then venture to Oxnard, California to visit Steve’s family.  Our parents also enjoyed making trips to Treasure Island Casino, and, once in a great while, even came home winners!

Mom is survived by her daughters, Cynthia (John) Sinz and Nancy Ousley along with her sons, Steven, Thomas (Jean), Frederic (Tali), and David; her son-in-law, Robert Wiinamaki;  grandchildren Aaron Sinz, Michael Sinz (Allison Campbell), Sarah (Jess) Roberts, Amber (Jason) Jochimsen, Nicole (Richard) Collins, Matthew Schmitz, Alexis Schmitz, Christopher Schmitz (Brady Borowski), Danny (Leigh) Schmitz, Zachary (Amanda) Schmitz, Hayden (Stephanie) Schmitz, Katie Ousley, and Jacob Ousley (Nadya Van Vonderen); great-grandchildren Samuel, Elliot, Maya, Lydia, Jackson, James, Theo, Griffin, Hannah, Roland, Arlo, Winslow, and one more great-grandson due in September; sister, Sally Miller; brother, Richard (Helen) Coughlin; along with many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 2019, daughter, Debra in 2010; parents, Maurice and Lillian; in-laws, John and Estella Schmitz; brothers, Donald (Auralia, Verna), Bernard (Beverly ,Beatrice), Ambrose (Mary), Jack (Florence); sister, Jane (Jack) Mueller; and sister, Helen, in infancy; sister-in-law, Peg Coughlin; brother-in-law, Vilas Miller; brother-in-law, Jack (Mary Ann) Schmitz; nephew, Timothy Coughlin; niece, Cheryl Schmitz; and niece, Susan Jenkins.

Our family feels so blessed for all the memories we have of Mom and will miss her.  We want to thank the employees of Comforts of Home, both the assisted-living and memory care units, along with Olive Grove Hospice, for taking such good care of Mom.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00AM Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood with Rev. Anbu Shanmugam officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00AM until the time of services at the church on Wednesday.

Rhiel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Elmwood, is serving the family.

Condolences may be made online at www.rhielfuneralhome.com.

Hey, Woodville! On Saturday, June 29, 2024, the 2024-25 Syttende Royal Court of Princesses (1st Princess Jessica Albers, 2nd Princess Addisyn Wichelman, and 3rd Princess Adeline Haugen) and I went to Clear Lake for their Annual Heritage Days.

We went to the Miss Clear Lake Queen’s Tea where we took pictures with the different photo booths, and we rode through their Traditional Grand Parade. There were tons of people for us to wave at! We had a great time taking pictures with our Woodville Leif Erickson float and other Sparkle Sister Courts there.

After the Queen’s Tea and Grand Parade, we went to Irma’s Place Restaurant on Hwy 63 in Clear Lake, where we got lemonades. The owners Stacy and Sasha say they love bringing good food to friends and family. “Our Grandma Irma was a matriarch who understood the importance of community. Delicious food always brings people together!” And the lemonade was delicious!

They were giving a deal on drinks for Royalty, and some of the proceeds even went to the Miss Clear Lake program!

It was a short, but fun weekend! We had a lot of fun spending the day together again. We hope you are enjoying your summer, we sure are!

SPRING VALLEY, WI – In May 2024, mother-son duo Kris and Tommy Cummings were baking pies for a cause: to raise money for the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) 150 bike ride that took place in Duluth, Minnesota on June 8 and 9, 2024.

After four other local high school kids, and several family and friends began to join in and signed up for the ride, the group closed out their pie baking careers – having baked over 200 pies for friends, families, neighbors, coworkers, teachers, and people who read about them. Altogether, the group was able to raise $3,000 – enough for all of them to participate in the ride.

On June 8, the group embarked on the 150-mile journey from Duluth, Minnesota to White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Every single one of them was able to cross the finish line.

David John Johnson was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, and friend. As a Child of God, he was welcomed Home on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the age of 84.

Dave was the fifth and youngest child of Victor and Agnes (Kordosky) Johnson. He was born on December 15, 1939, in Hastings, Minnesota and graduated from Hastings High School in 1957. On August 27, 1960, David and Rita (Hageman) were married at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hastings. They were blessed with six beautiful children: Brice, Lynn, Susan, Marc, Eric, and Scott; fourteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Dave graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and pursued a 35-year teaching career in high school English (seven years in Plum City and 28 years in Spring Valley). While teaching, Dave was Junior Class Advisor, Yearbook Advisor, and he chaperoned many a prom. A life of faith, family, service, and fun was most important to Dave.

Dave and Rita grounded their family in a deep-rooted Catholic faith. For 54 years, Dave generously served the Spring Valley community in many ways, including: serving as a lay minister at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, cooking for the ecumenical community vacation Bible school “Caterers for Christ,” serving on the SV Library Board, and coordinating the SV Food Shelf. He and his good friend, Brian Kirby, were honored as Grand Marshals of the Spring Valley Dam Days parade in 2006. Dave loved laughing with his family and watching his children and grandchildren participate in forensics, sports, and theater. He enjoyed picking strawberries and blueberries for himself and others. Being skilled in the kitchen meant many tasty meals for family and friends. Dave and Rita enjoyed many trips together to Laughlin, Las Vegas, Red Wing, Turtle Lake, and Hinckley (for the buffets). He also loved playing cards, participating in golf league, taking family road trips to California, and enjoying beautiful landscapes (always looking for a Dairy Queen).

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Agnes; brother Al and wife Pat; brother Vernon (Swede) and wife Dot; sister Mary Ellen Staiger; and son Brice David. He is survived by his loving wife, Rita; children Lynn (Karrie), Susan (Andy Losert), Marc, Eric (Kelly), Scott (Heidi); grandchildren Abby (Dan), Emily (Kevin), MaKenna, Taylor (Hunter), Erin, Mitchell, Anthony, Coleman, Mason, Avery, Nicholas, Nathan, Merrick, Isaac; and great grandchildren Nicohl, Charlotte, Oliver, Paul, Margaret; brother Thomas (Whitey) and wife Mary Ellen, brother-in-law Lloyd Staiger, and many other Hageman in-laws, relatives and friends.

A visitation took place at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Spring Valley, Wisconsin from 4-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. The funeral was held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 2024, with a visitation one hour before the service and a luncheon following. A burial with family will take place at a later date.

We are all so grateful for the years and memories we had with Dave, Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa. He will be deeply missed by those who have had the privilege to know and love him. We thank you for your thoughts, prayers, sentiments, and love. Our family extends a special thank you to the Spring Valley Area Ambulance Service, Spring Valley Health Care Center, the care teams at Menomonie Mayo and Luther Mayo in Eau Claire, Ross Keehr, and the Sacred Heart Parish Family.

Submitted by the Office of the Governor of the State of Wisconsin

MADISON, WI – Gov. Evers on Monday, July 1, 2024, recapped his visits with dairy farmers, processors, producers, and local community and agricultural industry leaders celebrating June Dairy Month and America’s Dairyland across the state over the month of June. During the visits, Gov. Evers highlighted the strength of the state’s dairy industry as well as efforts and investments by the governor and the Evers Administration to support Wisconsin’s farmers, their families, and the dairy industry over the past five years.

“Wisconsin didn’t become America’s Dairyland by chance—it’s thanks to the hard work of our farmers and their families, processors, and producers who’ve been the backbone of our state for generations and still are to this day,” said Gov. Evers. “Whether it’s producing a quarter of the nation’s cheese and over 32 billion pounds of milk in 2023 alone or contributing more than $45 billion annually to the state’s economy, dairy is part of our DNA as Wisconsinites, and it’s a history and tradition we’re incredibly proud of. Thank you to all of the folks who opened their homes, farms, businesses, and so many others and welcomed me during June Dairy Month, and I look forward to our continued work together celebrating and supporting America’s Dairyland all year round.”

The governor kicked off June Dairy Month with his weekly radio address, focusing on the state’s dairy industry and encouraging Wisconsinites to support local dairy farmers. Gov. Evers also proclaimed June 2024 as “June Dairy Month” throughout the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s dairy industry is a significant part of the state’s cultural heritage and a central driver of the state’s economic future. According to DATCP, Wisconsin is home to nearly 6,000 dairy farms—more than any other state—and the dairy industry contributes $45.6 billion annually to Wisconsin’s economy.

Gov. Evers this year received the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) 2024 Cheese Champion Award “for his dedication to maintaining the state’s leadership in the dairy industry.”

Additionally, in celebration of the month, the governor did a statewide tour visiting farmers and producers across the state. On Monday, June 3, Gov. Evers visited Tri-Fecta Farms Family Market in Fox Lake, where he toured the farm, learned about the farm’s sustainability efforts, and met with the Schultz family. Keven Schultz, a 2024 Master Agriculturalist, started the farm with his wife Cheryl in 1979. Today, their three adult kids and their families largely run the farm operations. Gov. Evers was joined for the tour by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Secretary Randy Romanski.

On Friday, June 14, Gov. Evers, joined by First Lady Kathy Evers, started their day with a tour of Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese in Waterloo. A member of WCMA, Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese makes award-winning cheese from milk from their own Holstein cows and has received several awards for their mozzarella, mascarpone, cheese curds, and Oaxaca, including several awards from the World Champion Cheese Contest. The governor and first lady were joined for the tour by WMCA Executive Director Umhoefer and Senior Director Rebekah Sweeney.

On Saturday, June 15, Gov. Evers attended the annual Sheboygan County Dairy Breakfast at Vandoske Dairy Farms in Cleveland, where he was joined by DATCP Deputy Secretary Aileen Switzer. While there, the governor met with the Vandoske family and joined Sheboygan County Dairy Promotion Association Director Terry Mentink and the Vandoske family on a tour of the farm. The governor also got a sneak peek of the Vandoske’s new on-farm ice cream shop, which opened this month.

On Wednesday, June 26, Gov. Evers visited Pine River Pre-Pack Inc. in Newton, where he was joined by DATCP Secretary Romanski and Rebekah Sweeney from WCMA. During the visit, the governor and secretary went on a tour of the facility, where they saw the warehouses and production rooms and saw the process of mixing and filling of the cheese spreads. Additionally, in January, DATCP announced Pine River Pre-Pack Inc. received a grant through the state’s Dairy Processor Grant Program, a program the governor has been proud to support through his budgets, including increasing support for the program in his 2023-25 biennial budget by $300,000 in each year of the biennium.

On Friday, June 28, Gov. Evers visited Weiss Family Farms in Durand and was joined by DATCP Secretary Romanski. Weiss Family Farms started its operations in 1882, and seven generations later, their herd of 1,850 dairy cows supplies approximately 150,000 pounds of milk to Eau Galle Cheese in Durand each day. During their visit, the governor and secretary met with the Weiss family and took a tour of the farm.

To conclude his 2024 June Dairy Month visits, the governor visited Nordic Creamery in Westby, which opened a new storefront in 2021 with the help of a grant from the governor’s Main Street Bounceback Grant Program. Additionally, in January, DATCP announced Nordic Creamery received a Dairy Processor Grant, which they have used to produce new A2 milk cheese varieties. While there, the governor also saw the petting zoo and small picnic area that Nordic Creamery is using to expand its business to focus on agritourism as well.

Gov. Evers has been proud to support Wisconsin’s dairy industry over the past five years by directing $100 million to support Wisconsin farmers in all 72 counties through the Wisconsin Farm Support Program, increasing funding for the Dairy Processor Grant Program by $1 million in total over the last two biennial budgets, signing legislation and supporting initiatives to promote Wisconsin’s export program and dairy exports, and bolstering the long-term viability of the dairy industry by investing in programs and projects like the Dairy Innovation Hub and the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to a $300,000 increase each year for the Dairy Processor Grant Program to help businesses improve and modernize their operations, the 2023-25 budget signed by Gov. Evers made sure farmers and producers have reliable roads to transport their goods and supplies safely and securely from point A to point B by providing $150 million for a new Agricultural Road Improvement Program.
