Golf team ends season at Regionals

0

HAMMOND, WI – Just when the weather was turning for the better, the golf season ended for the Spring Valley golf team.

The Cardinals competed at the WIAA Regional Golf Tournament hosted by Baldwin-Woodville at Pheasant Hills Golf Course here. The Cardinal team is a co-operastive with Elmwood-Plum City, which puts the Cardinals in division two for the WIAA tournament. That means the Cardinals are golfing against bigger schools with tougher competition.

The Regional had nine teams competing with the top four teams advancing to the WIAA Sectional in Rice Lake at Turtleback Golf Course. The top four individuals not on those top four teams also earn the chance to advance to the Sectionals as well.

WOOVILLE, WI – Hello Woodville! This weekend, June 1 and 2, 2024, the Court and I attended our first events.

On Saturday, we went as a group and watched the Roberts and Hammond Coronation.

The Roberts and Hammond ladies did very well, and we all enjoyed cheering them on Sunday, for our first parades and Queen’s Teas.

Princesses Addisyn and Adeline went back over to Roberts with the troll float. They spent time with the new Roberts and Hammond Courts.

It was a great day for a parade and the two enjoyed some rides together.

Meanwhile, Princess Jessica and I took the Ship float over to Eleva’s Broiler Fest. We enjoyed some great chicken, and even got to hold a parrot!

Next weekend we all look forward to going to two more parades as a Court all together.

Good times at WIAA Track Sectionals, but no advances

0

CAMERON, WI – There is always the goal of running your best time, jumping your longest or highest jump, throwing the furthest, in your last meet of the season. Plenty of the Spring Valley track team members that qualified for the sectional meet here did just that.

Unfortunately, for the school without a track, none of the athletes from Spring Valley that competed had the opportunity to advance to the WIAA State Track Meet next week in LaCrosse. Quite a few of them had their best day of competition however, setting personal records along the way.

The best finish of the day came from senior Abby Biggs, who just missed advancing to the state meet with a fifth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles, earning four points with a finishing time of 16.79. Only the top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet. The senior also placed ninth in the pole vault, jumping nine feet even.

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The Eldon and Josephine Hill Scholarship, a Fund of the Eau Claire Community Foundation, was established in memory of both Eldon and Josephine Hill, past residents of Spring Valley, Wisconsin. It supports the post-secondary educations of Spring Valley graduates by awarding two $12,000 scholarships and two $5000 scholarships each year. The Hill Family plans to endow the Fund with an $850,000 gift to ensure that the Eldon and Josephine Hill Scholarships will be awarded in perpetuity.

Eldon Fred Hill grew up during the Great Depression in the city of Loyal, WI. In 1949, Eldon and his wife Josephine settled in Spring Valley, Wisconsin, where Eldon established his medical practice. During this time, five of their seven children were born, and Eldon cherished the memories of their small, tight-knit rural community. Eldon would go on to practice medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Eldon continued his medical practice until retirement. He passed away peacefully on April 26, 2023, at the age of 102. The Hill family continues to support Eldon’s belief that everyone should have the opportunity to further their education.

On May 8, 2024, four Spring Valley graduates received the first Eldon and Josephine Hill scholarships. The recipients were selected based on their leadership, academic achievement, and extracurricular involvement. Grade point average was not a determining factor.

“We are incredibly proud of our four students who have earned these inaugural scholarships. These scholarships are a testament to their hard work and a promising step towards their bright futures,” said Spring Valley Schools Superintendent John Groh.

The following Spring Valley High School graduates are the first recipients of the Eldon and Josephine Hill scholarship awards:

  • $12,000 four-year scholarships: Abigail Biggs: UW- River Falls, planning to major in Radiography. Joel Anderson: UW-Madison, planning to study Biochemistry on the Pre-Med track.
  • $5,000 two-year scholarships: Charli Vanasse: Chippewa Valley Technical College, planning to major in Chemistry. Travis Koenning: University of Northern Ohio, planning to major in Automotive Technology.

Since 1997, the Eau Claire Community Foundation has awarded more than $30 million in grants to over 700 nonprofit organizations. Its diverse array of Funds allows donors to support causes that are important to them. Roselyn Sylla

Roselyn T Sylla, age 83 of Elmwood, Wisconsin, died the evening of May 23, 2024, at the Pigeon Falls Health Care Center in Pigeon Falls, WI surrounded by her family.

Roselyn was born September 13, 1940, in the Township of Burnside, rural Arcadia. She was the daughter of Ernest and Polly (Kampa) Puchalla and grew up in the Independence community. As a young girl, Roselyn first learned to speak English while attending SS Peter and Paul Catholic school, having only known Polish up to that point. After graduating from Independence High School in 1958, Roselyn went to work at Trempealeau County Title and Abstract until she married William “Bill” Sylla, on Oct 14, 1961, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church-Independence. After marrying, Roselyn and Bill moved to Menona, Iowa, for Bill’s job, and while there started their family with the birth of their first child, Karen. In 1964 they moved back to Wisconsin, and purchased their forever home in rural Elmwood where they raised their seven children and continued to live for the next 60 years.

As a farmgirl and first-born sibling, Roselyn took on the responsibility of running a household at a very early age, raising her two youngest brothers so her Ma could help her Pa with the farm. These formative years helped develop Roselyn’s natural talents—nurturing, leading, teaching, planning, organizing, while honing her superior culinary, creative and life skills.

Together with Bill, Roselyn worked to provide opportunities for their seven children. Even as their family fanned out across the country and world, Roselyn and Bill continued to support them across the miles, often traveling extensively to attend a grandchild’s baptism, First Communion, or Confirmation. They traveled many miles to celebrate marriages, share birthdays, graduations, concerts, recitals, and sporting events. In addition to her devotion to family, Roselyn still found time to give back to the community. She was a faithful member of Elmwood’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served in many capacities: Altar and Rosary Society, Choir, catechism program, Ecumenical Choir, rosary leader, and Eucharistic ministry. Roselyn also enjoyed participating in many community events held by the Rock Elm’s Old Settler’s and Elmwood’s Enrichment Council.

Roselyn is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Karen Sylla of Red Wing, MN, Margaret Pfeffer of Sacramento, CA, Michelle (Bryan) Bowes of Severna Park, MD, Bill (Monica) Sylla of Portsmouth, NH, Susan (Mark) Pitman of Snoqualmie, WA, and Tom (Ricci) Sylla of Newark, CA; brothers Jim (LaVonne) Puchalla and Andy (Carol) Puchalla of Independence. She is further survived by 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Roselyn is preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Cheryl, granddaughter, Alexandra Pitman, and a brother, Dominic “Duke” Puchalla.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on June 11, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood. Burial will be in the church cemetery immediately following the funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held at Club 10 in Durand, WI following the services.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Elmwood Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rosary prayed at 6:30. Visitation will also be held prior to mass from 10:00 to 11:00.

Rhiel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Elmwood, is serving the family.

Arthur Dungan

0

Arthur Harold Dungan, known to all as Harold, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on May 25, 2024, at the age of 81.

Born on March 23, 1943, in Cedar Vale, Kansas, the fourth and youngest child of Arthur and Creola Dungan, Harold was known for being a man of many contradictions. He was a history buff, loved reading, and seemed to have a wealth of knowledge, despite struggling in school. He was a talented carpenter who never got around to finishing the house he started building 40 years ago. He was generous with strangers, neighbors, and scholarship funds but never spent a dime on himself, except for that purple Jaguar. And of course, he loved contradicting others whenever he had the chance. He met friends “to argue” over coffee up until the end.

Harold served in the U.S. Army for six years, most memorably as part of Operation Big Lift in 1963, the largest movement of troops by air to that date. He later had many jobs and adventures across the United States, including working as a logger in Alaska, a farm hand in Kansas, and a handyman in Arizona, before settling in Wisconsin and becoming a union carpenter and later a truck driver, driving all over the U.S. and Canada. He made friends with many people, and every stray dog and cat along the way.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Creola, sister Mary Evelyn Allen, and brother Levi Dungan. Harold is survived by his daughters, Janice and Mary, four grandchildren, and his brother Richard Dungan. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of a good story, and his contributions to the community.

Per Harold’s request, his body was donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program for medical education. A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends at a later date. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to the Spring Valley Alumni Memorial Scholarship by sending checks payable to: “Spring Valley Schools Scholarship Fund” to School District of Spring Valley, C/O Scholarship Fund, S1450 County Road CC Spring Valley, WI, 54767.

She attended classes at Augsburg College and completed her nurses training at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis.

On June 30, 1962, she married Leslie “Les” Holm at Zion Lutheran Church. They lived in the Minneapolis area for a time where they were blessed with three children, Bradley, Mark, and Carrie. Dorothy worked as a Registered Nurse at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital for 17 years. The family moved back to Woodville in 1977 and Dorothy joined the daytime staff at Parkview Nursing Home where she worked for 24 years as a Registered Nurse and Interim Director of Nursing. Les and Dorothy celebrated their 60-year wedding anniversary in 2022 just weeks prior to Les passing.

Dorothy and Les were active members of the community. Les was a member of the Lions Club and Dorothy was a member of the Women’s Club. In her younger years, she was a bowler on the Purple Door Bowling League. After she retired, she enjoyed Friday afternoons volunteering at Treasures from the Heart in Baldwin. She made many friends throughout the years while living in and serving her community. Some of her favorite times were when she took amazing trips with her friends to places like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and Mexico. Her most treasured trip was to Israel with her sister, Judy.

After retiring in 2002 at the age of 62, Dorothy spent most of her days spoiling her grandchildren, planting, and caring for her flowers, picking up sticks, going on ATV rides and generally keeping an eye on Les to make sure he was staying out of trouble. She looked forward to her weekly card games with the ladies. Most recently, she enjoyed her daily chats with long time neighbor and friend, Barb Johnson, who always made sure to check on Dorothy. She also looked forward to her weekly visits with her granddaughter, Casey, who made sure she never missed a hair appointment and that her fridge was always stocked with the essentials.

Dorothy will remain in the hearts of many including her children, Brad Holm, Mark (Kellie) Holm, and Carrie (Jason) Dodge; grandchildren, Joseph Holm, Cayla (Steven) Mataczynski, Casey Holm, Tori Holm, Ally (Jeffery) Blum, Samantha Ware, Isaac (Brooke) Tuttle, and Mattison Dodge; sister, Judy Stene; brother/sister-in-law, Robert and Dawn Iverson; sister-in-law, Judy Dosdoll; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Leslie; her parents, Benny and Edna Iverson; parents-in-law, Norman and Esther Skresvig; and her closest friends, Kenny, Ronnie, Bonnie and Carol.

WOODVILLE, WI – The numbers are in, and the Woodville Lions Club confirmed the success of the 73rd Annual Syttende Mai Celebration that was held this past May 16, 17 and 18, 2024. The great weather was wonderful and a blessing for bringing visitors to Woodville for the traditional Norwegian get together and the Lions were grateful for it!

According to the map and listings generated by the Village there were 22 known (and probably more) Garage Sales with bargains throughout the Village and outlaying area taking place during Syttende 2024.

The Stipes Shows was going full “tilt” with rides like the Tilt-a-Whirl, plenty of games and lots of tasty treats to eat all throughout the Syttende Mai Celebration in Woodville.
