SPRING VALLEY, WI – On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. members of the Rickerd-Danielson American Legion Post 227 held a short groundbreaking ceremony for a new granite Veteran’s War Memorial. The Legionnaires were joined by Post Auxiliary members, some Boy Scouts, and interested members of the community for the ceremony. The Memorial is located just west of the original veteran’s Memorial location and next door to Spring Valley Dentistry near Park Drive and World War I Veterans Memorial Highway (State Highway 29).

Post Commander Pete Esanbock had some opening remarks before the shovels were taken up to break ground for the large (five feet tall by eight inches thick) new granite Memorial marker. Garden at the Big Rock

Baldwin, WI – The large boulder near the Baldwin Public Library was uncovered during nearby housing construction in 2013. It weighs about 10 tons and was probably brought to the Baldwin area by glaciers.  It is an interesting rock that has been admired by many and now it is the centerpiece of a pollinator garden.

The Public Library partnered with the Dry-Run Go Getters 4-H Club and the Botany Belles and Beaus Garden Club to create a native plant pollinator garden around it.  On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, 22 4-Hers participated in digging, planting and watering an assortment of native plants and shrubs.  They were assisted by parents, garden club members and Friends of the Library.   As these plants mature they will provide nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, host plants for caterpillars, insects for birds, and beauty for us to view.

Some of the plants included in the planting are:  Red Osier Dogwood, New England Asters, Butterfly Weed, Columbine, Purple Coneflower, Prairie Dropseed, Little Bluestem, Meadow Blazingstar, Bergamont, Penstemon, Nodding Pink Onion, Cream False Indigo, Ohio Spiderwort, and more.  The variety will provide blooms from spring through fall.

Funding was provided by a St. Croix Valley Master Gardener Grant.  Thank you.  The St. Croix Valley Master Gardeners organization is an active group that serves residents in Pierce and St. Croix counties through community service, educational events, and provides horticultural information.  Their annual plant sale which funds the grant program in on Saturday, June 1st at the Octagon House in Hudson from 9am to 1pm.

Baseball team tops Clear Lake before facing Clear Lake in playoffs

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Sometimes a win comes at just the right moment.

The Spring Valley baseball team got a much-needed win this past Monday after losing three straight last week in conference play. The win could set the Cardinals up for a first-round victory as they beat Clear Lake on Monday and face Clear Lake today (Thursday) in the opening round of the WIAA tournament.

Valley had dropped three straight conference games prior to the non-conference win this past Monday. The regular season finale leaves the Cardinals with a 7-11 overall record, 6-8 conference mark. The record gave the Cardinals a #7 seed in the Region and a home game with Clear Lake today. The winner will travel to face #2 seeded Flambeau on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, and a win there would mean the next game would be on Wednesday, May 29.

WESTERN WISCONSIN – Each year on the last Monday in May, the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military are honored. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” Memorial Day began following the Civil War. According to History.com, “The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.

By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.”
