Baseball team falls to Durand, Elk Mound, looking to rebound

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The Spring Valley baseball team continues to find ways to both win and lose, and unfortunately for the Cardinals it was more of the latter last week.

Valley fell at home in a back-and-forth game with Durand on Monday and followed it up with a struggle against Elk Mound last Friday to fall to fourth place in the conference with a 3-3 record. Elk Mound (5-0), Mondovi (5-1) and Boyceville (4-1) are ahead of the Cardinals and Valley traveled to Mondovi this past Monday (results in next week’s newspaper).

Durand 7, Spring Valley 6 – The Panthers struck both early and late in this game to take the win away from the Cardinals.

The “Puzzle Crushers” crushed the competition and finished their puzzle in 1 hour and 12 minutes, taking the First-Place win in the Elmwood Public Library hosted first “Jigsaw Puzzle Contest.” Submitted photo

ELMWOOD, WI – On Saturday, April 20, 2024, seven teams with twenty-four people total, congregated at the historic Elmwood Auditorium for an afternoon of fun, and puzzle solving as the Elmwood Public Library hosted their first “Jigsaw Puzzle Contest.”

500 piece wrapped mystery puzzles were selected from a table, and teams were given two hours to complete their puzzles. While competitors had no idea what was in their box, some puzzles were clearly trickier than others –  with small pieces, strange shapes, and difficult pictures.

Despite the puzzle difficulty, the teams were enthusiastic. The seven teams that competed in this first ever competition were “Butch’s Angels,” “Sharraca,” “Team Happy,” “Puzzlers,” “Puzzle Crushers,” “Gettin’ Jiggy with it,” and Family Matters.” With a mix of all ages competing, there was even a team with four generations present!

WOODVILLE, WI – For the 15th year, all Viking Middle School (VMS) eighth grade students participated with schools from across the nation in a rigorous academic event called National History Day (NHD). Its primary purpose is to get students excited about all types of history while developing research, critical thinking, and presentation skills. For us, an additional goal is for students to recognize that history is a part of everyday life, not just something found in a textbook.

The NHD competition started at Viking Middle School in November 2023 in their 8th grade history class when students started picking topics to research based on this year’s annual theme: “Turning Points in History.”

All students presented their projects in January 2024 and were judged by our local high school AP (Advance Placement) History students who were organized by Mr. Jeremy Gerritts.

The AP students helped select the best 8th grade projects to move on to the Regional competition located at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire which was right before spring break.

The Regional Qualifiers from Viking were Daisy Austrum, Jackson Bauer, Leslie Burton, Gabriel Butler, Tessa Crowley, JT Dachel, Arianna George, Lucy Gray, Grant Halstead, Kenzie Hite, Adam Olson, Grady Johnson, Ava Kampin, Tucker Katelhut, Katie Kroening, Owen Lynum, Brylee Mcdonough, McKenzie Mckay, Lizzie Momchilovich, Sora Morales, Rhyan Nichols, Dawson Nigbor, Tess O’Connell, Colton Palmer, Addy Richardson, Molly Sarauer, Yaretzi Sarrengo, Olivia Waters, and Lou Willink.

Out of the 29 Regional participants, 16 students were selected by the judges to move on to the State competition which took place on Saturday April 20, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin.

The VMS 8th grade NHD State qualifiers were Jackson Bauer, Arianna George, Gabriel Butler, Grant Halstaed, Mckenzie Hite, Ava Kampin, Tucker Katelhut, Owen Lynum, McKenzie McKay, Lizzie Momchilovich, Dawson Nigbor, Adam Olson, Colton Palmer, Olivia Waters, Louisa Willink, and Molly Sarauer.

This year VMS did exceptionally well at the State National History Day competition.

Arianna George was selected as a National Qualifier for her paper on the Bessemer Process and Lizzie Momchillovich was selected as a National Alternate for her paper on Buddy Holly.

Congratulations to all the Viking Middle School eighth grade students that worked so hard on their National History Day projects!

Sidney Anderson

0

Sidney Cecil Anderson passed away on April 13, 2024, at the age of 76 in New Richmond, Wisconsin. Born on August 17, 1947, in Baldwin, WI, Sid brought endless energy, joy, and a youthful spirit to all aspects of his life and was known to be a bit mischievous. Growing up he was nicknamed “Sid the Kid,” which followed him his whole life.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1968 and proudly served in the Vietnam war. Upon returning from his service Sid started as a lumberjack before starting his own drywall business. He took great pride in his log work and his chainsaw, working to build a home from the trees on his family farm. He also took pride in his drywall business, especially in teaching his stepson Daniel the trade and seeing him excel in it, with constant compliments from contractors. Sid also enjoyed raising sheep; lamb season was an annual highlight for more than 20 years. He brought a “work hard, play hard” mentality to everything he did.

From his high school days as a track star to his participation in numerous marathons as an adult, Sid’s love to go fast was evident throughout his life. His adventuresome spirit knew no bounds, always seeking new experiences. Sid truly lived by the motto that “laughter doeth good like a medicine.” He was also a talented guitarist and singer, and had a heart for helping others, as seen through the many mission trips he took with his wife Rose to Mexico and South America with Pioneers Outreach on the Amazon.

Sid’s energetic and outgoing personality will be remembered and deeply missed by his loving wife Rose, his daughter Tammy; his six stepchildren, Jennifer, Bernie, Rebecca, Heather, Daniel, Sarah; his 35 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; his five siblings; and his many nieces, nephews, extended family, close friends, and his community.

He will be welcomed in Heaven, to rejoice in eternal life along with his parents, Gordon and Irene Anderson; sons Sidney (Infant) and Joseph Anderson; infant brother Gary Anderson; father-in-law Bernard Roemer and mother-in-law Josephine Roemer (Donald) Triggs.

Friends and family were invited to gather in honor of Sid’s life on Sunday April 21, 2024, at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Visitation began at 10, with a funeral service at 11 followed by lunch. Burial will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.

Lloyd Wallin

Lloyd J. Wallin, 72, died peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on April 20, 2024. Lloyd fought a brave battle against a rare form of blood cancer for three years without complaint. His strength is admired and there is comfort and peace in knowing that Lloyd was able to end his courageous fight on his own terms.

Lloyd was born November 21, 1951, to Vern and Ruth (Krick). He was raised in Golden Valley, Minnesota and graduated from Robbinsdale Senior High in 1969. As a young child, Lloyd and the neighborhood kids spent countless hours playing pick-up games of football, basketball, baseball, and hockey. Lloyd’s favorite team sport was hockey. He joined a hockey league with his childhood friends, and they were given the nickname the “French Connection” for their dominant scoring ability on the line.

He was also an avid hunter and fisherman during his younger years. He would make many trips to his friend’s hunting cabin where a lot of hunting and cards would take place. True to his goal-setting nature, once he was able to shoot a “massive” buck, he considered his accomplishments as a hunter complete and stepped away from hunting.

Lloyd’s passion for golf grew as a teenager when he began working at the Theodore Wirth Golf Course in Minneapolis. This high school job would evolve into a lifetime love of the sport. Most people who think of Lloyd, think of golf. He was an accomplished golfer and participated in many tournaments throughout the years. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mathematics, Lloyd would go on to help design golf courses and it is what brought him to Spring Valley, the town he called home.

In 1980 Lloyd began his career at the Spring Valley Golf Course. He was instrumental in turning the 9-hole course into an 18-hole course. Lloyd worked primarily behind the scenes with the paperwork and financial aspect of the transition of the course. It has also been said that his calm demeanor and ability to mediate others was an essential part in the success of the golf course. Lloyd would spend many years managing and operating the golf course and restaurant.

Lloyd purchased Bill’s Bar in 1996. He spent nine years owning and operating the bar and spent countless hours behind the bar doing what he loved best – storytelling, making jokes and “talking smart.” During his time at Bill’s Bar, he continued to build lasting friendships in the community.

Bill’s Bar was sold in 2005 and Lloyd was fortunate enough to enjoy an early retirement. He would use his time to pursue his passion of nature photography and take many adventures near and far trying to capture scenery or wildlife. A few of Lloyd’s impressive travel destinations included the Arctic Circle, American Samoa, Alaska, Hawaii, many Canadian destinations, and a visit to every United States National Park. We are lucky to have thousands of pictures from his journeys to look back on.

Lloyd also enjoyed filling his time with strategic puzzles and games, reading, and playing cards (namely cribbage). However, his greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family. His role as grandpa was what brought him the most joy. He spent as much time possible with his grandchildren and rarely missed any of their events. Lloyd absolutely adored the time he shared with them. His grandchildren always loved his silly antics – “knee noogies,” “gooshies,” “toe twisters,” and whatever other nonsensical sayings Lloyd would make up to entertain them. He taught them to love and hate Minnesota sports, and we will forever think of him and give an extra ”Skol” when watching our Minnesota Vikings.

We were lucky to love and be loved by Lloyd. As a family we will miss him beyond measure but take comfort in knowing he is pain free and at peace. Our memories will forever be cherished, and we will continue finding ways to carry him with us. He was truly one of a kind. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Eau Claire Mayo Cancer Center, St. Croix Hospice and Keehr Funeral Home for their love and support during this difficult time.

Survivors include his daughters Andrea Wallin (Chauncey Helgeson), Elizabeth Wallin (Scott Holmes), his beloved grandchildren Natalie, Ethan, and Graham and his special cat Cruella.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Lloyd’s life and share stories and memories will be on Friday, April 26, 2024, from 5-8 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. (keehrfuneralhome.com).
