SHELL LAKE, WI – The Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team had a little bit of a break last week without a mid-week match as in previous weeks. The squad was able to rest and recover from injuries and compete at the Shell Lake Challenge here over the weekend with some good showings by the young team.
SV/E was among 14 teams competing in the challenge. New Richmond won the event with 263 points, well ahead of Clear Lake in second place with 200.5 points. Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren was third with 181 points followed by Spooner/Webster (176). Shell Lake (170), Ashland (136), Unity (121). Rice Lake (102), SV/E (71), Bloomer/Colfax (68.5), Bruce (41.5), Chequamegon (30.5), Thorp/Owen-Withee (27) and McDonell (5).
The Cardinals were led by freshman Sam Schmitt, who finished in second place at 138 points, earning 26 points for the team. Schmitt lost the championship match to Luke Kamish of New Richmond by fall in the waning seconds of the first period.
