Betty Hartung

0

Betty A. Hartung, age 94 of Elmwood, died Tuesday January 2, 2024, at Hudson Hospital and Clinic in Hudson surrounded by her family.

Betty was born November 21, 1929, in the Township of Lima, rural Durand. She was the daughter of Andrew and Emma (Bauer) Brunner and grew up in the Lima community. She attended elementary and high school at Sacred Heart Catholic schools at Lima. After high school, Betty attended business college and worked for a short time for a law firm in Durand. She married Robert “Bob” D. Hartung June 7, 1949, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church-Lima, and were married for 72 years. Shortly after marriage, Betty and Bob began their family and purchased a small farm just outside Elmwood (Farm Hill). It is on this farm that they continued to farm and raise their eight children.

Even with the large family to attend to, Betty always made herself available to help others through her membership with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood and as an active member of the church’s Ladies Aid and Alter & Rosary Societies. Betty never missed an opportunity to help neighbors who had lost loved ones or that were going through difficult situations. Betty was a mother of eight, but more than that, she was the ultimate example of a “mom.” She had a way of making each of her children feel like they were the most special. Betty was best known for being an incredible cook and baker. As her family grew up and began families of their own, it was not uncommon for Betty to serve over 30 family members for holiday lunches and dinner and always a full course meal with a large choice of desserts to go with it. Betty enjoyed it more than anything when she could provide someone with a meal, and they went away satisfied. Betty had a heart of gold that extended beyond her own family and to all those which she saw a need.

As the kids grew and moved away, Betty took up hobbies to occupy time that included ceramics, playing cards, and of course doting over her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her children, Lynda (Rick) Condon of Parrish Fl, John of Sarasota, FL, Richard (Marla) of Manvel, TX, Randy (Ruth) of Elmwood, Mary (Bob) Milliren of Plum City, Terri of Prescott, Becky (Dave) Will of Ellsworth; a sister, Goldene Weiss of Elmwood.

She is further survived by 27 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob in 2022, a son, Robert Joseph (Bobby), a brother Hubert (Helen) Brunner, sisters, Sr. M. Mona Brunner, Winifred (Louis) Schuh and Jean (Al) McCook; and a brother-in-law, Edmund Weiss.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday January 8, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood with Rev. Anbalagn Shanmugam officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery immediately following the services.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Welcome Home Assisted Living in Elmwood and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mel, Lindsey, Mallory and all the staff at Welcome Home Assisted Living in Elmwood for all the kindness, loving and tender care that was shown to our mother.

Condolences to the family may be made at rhielfuneralhome.com.

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The annual traditions of holiday concerts and programs came to Spring Valley again this year as the Stagehands offered two delightful seasonal events. The plays “Murder in the Heir” in March and “Beauty & the Beast” in July 2023 are coming to the Stagehands Theatre along with a high school production in April as well.

The Community and Youth Choirs, under the direction of Cindy Kongshaug and Ann Turner, offered beautiful (and sometimes antic-filled) renditions of favorite holiday songs. The turnout for the “O Holy Night” concerts was strong again this year and those attending remarked on the inspiration and festive spirit that was shared.

The next two weekends in December 2023, continued the merriment as Liz Erickson directed “Christmas Every Day,” a Christmas-focused play that examined what might happen if we did, in fact, have Christmas every day.

All who attended the play remarked at the amazing talent that was shared by the children in the cast, as well as by its adult members.

The final weekend found the Theatre at a near sell-out, which was an important boon for the Stagehands as they seek to raise funds to repair the 1950’s era building marquee along with other needs.

As you may recall, the marquee has been the unlucky recipient of multiple hits by delivery vehicles over the years, and this past spring, it really took a hard whack.

The Stagehands have issued an appeal to the community for support in repairing the vintage marquee, The following request was printed in the holiday show programs (and still applies):

Our Marquee Needs You! Thank you for all you do and have done to support the Stagehands. We truly appreciate your generosity, as we rely on our patrons and communities to help us upkeep our theatre space and provide live entertainment at a reasonable cost. Perhaps you noticed as you entered the theatre that our marquee is in need of some TLC! (If you didn’t, be sure and have a look as you exit the theatre.)

In March, a delivery truck hit the marquee and in determining how best to repair it (as this was not the first such blow), we saw that there was more going on under the surface than an insurance claim of $16,000 will cover. We have received a bid of approximately $40,000 to shore up the structure and ensure that it continues to shine. So, we are appealing to you to help us raise the additional $24,000.

Can you help? If so, please use the donation envelope in your program, or drop us some $$ love in the basket out front or in the mail. You can mail a donation to: Stagehands Theatre, PO Box 11, Spring Valley, WI 54767.

And thank you once again for your support!

A look into future funding and facilities for SDSV

0

By John Groh, District Administrator, SDSV

SPRING VALLEY, WI – (January 2, 2024) Happy New Year! The month of January is named after the Roman god Janus who had one face that looked forward and one that looked back. This article will do the same. A little over one year ago the School District of Spring Valley (SDSV) engaged the community in a conversation about two referendum questions. The first asked voters to support district operations and the second was to address outdoor community use and athletic facilities. Last April the voters spoke through the ballot box. The operating referendum narrowly failed to pass by nine votes. The facilities referendum received support from a little over 41% of those that voted.

In June 2023, state legislators and Governor Evers did something unexpected. For six of the previous eight years, per pupil funding increases were frozen. However, the lowest spending districts across the State were granted the ability to raise the low revenue ceiling by $1,000 per pupil. Spring Valley ranked 394th out of 421 districts in per pupil funding. This change along with future increases are estimated to help the district climb out of a deficit spending cycle over the next five years. An operating referendum remains a possibility in the future, but the funding limit changes have bought SDSV some time.

A comprehensive facilities study was initiated in November 2022 and the final report was presented to the School Board this past April. It identified and prioritized maintenance work for the middle/high school, pool, bus garage, and outdoor spaces. The elementary school was not a focus of this work as it was less than two years old at that time. Since then, the Board began the work of determining what steps to take next.

At a recent board meeting on December 20, 2023, a decision was made to hire a long-range facility planning and project management partner. The Board heard proposals from two reputable companies, Market & Johnson and Nexus Solutions. After a very thorough discussion, the Board selected Nexus Solutions as the partner. Nexus works primarily with school districts in both Wisconsin and Minnesota. References for both companies were excellent. A common theme with those that have worked with Nexus is their ability to connect with and listen to the community during the development of plans and their vision for developing educational spaces.

As the new year unfolds, please look and listen for progress in the formation of plans to address long-range facility plans. The School Board will be seeking public input regarding priorities for the next best steps. Important factors will include how to best prepare our students for their futures, how facilities can improve the educational experience for our students, how to be proactive and strategic about repairs and updates to maximize the impact of every dollar, and finally how and when to best pay for what we value in Spring Valley.

The referendum outcomes from last year were welcomed feedback. They helped get us to the point we are at now. The new partnership with Nexus Solutions will undoubtedly open new opportunities. These are exciting times at SDSV not only because of the great learning happening each day, but thinking about the vision of where we will go in the future. Thank you for taking the time to read this article and for your ongoing support for the students and staff of the School District of Spring Valley!

I wish you the very best in 2024 and I look forward to connecting with you.
