As we say farewell to 2023 and look forward to 2024, let’s take a little time to look back on some of the events in Spring Valley and Elmwood and the surrounding communities in this interesting past year from the pages of your hometown newspaper, the Sun-Argus.

On the front pages of the Sun-Argus for May 4 and 11, 2023, was this community news item in two parts, “Dr. Gary Lukes to retire, Valley View Eye Clinic to close in August 2023 Part I and II – “After 40 years, I’ve kind of run out of gas” By Paul J. Seeling

Girls’ hoops struggle through illness and injury over break, drop three games

ELK MOUND, WI – The Spring Valley girls’ basketball team only has a limited number of players this year, and when injuries and illnesses, which are inevitable in the winter months, take hold of a team, well, the effects can be devastating.

The girls’ team played a pair of games in the Clayton Invitational during the holiday break without a few players, most notably senior Mara Ducklow who is the leading scorer on the team.

Valley struggled in losses to Clayton and South Shore, as well as on the road at Elk Mound here last week in a return to Dunn-St. Croix Conference action.

Wrestling team wins conference dual match, competes at New Richmond Invite

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – There has been some really steady improvement for the young Spring Valley-Elmwood wrestling team over the course of the season so far. The Cardinals got a good team win in their first conference dual match at home, then followed that up with some good wrestling at a very competitive New Richmond Invitational on Saturday with schools from both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

SV/E 40, Mondovi/Eleva-Strum 35 – The Cardinals knew that every point was going to count as both teams would be surrendering points in forfeit matches.

The Buffaloes took the early lead with a technical-fall win at 190 pounds by Alex Coffey over freshman Connor Wines. But Jack Steinmeyer got a quick 22-second win for the Cards by fall at 215 pounds to put the Cards up 6-5. The match was like that for a while, back-and-forth. Blaine Stevenson beat SV/E sophomore Tyler Vanasse at 285 by fall before freshman Dane O’Meara won by forfeit at 106 to keep the Cardinals ahead 12-11.

Ruth was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love for others did not stop with just her family, she loved caring for those in need and became a CNA and worked at both Parkview in Woodville and Baldwin Care Center for many years.

Ruth was a wonderful cook and had a talent for beautifully decorating cakes. She loved to stay active and participated in church circles at First Reformed Church in Baldwin and was involved in the Baldwin Dutch Community. She spent much of her free time gardening, traveling, playing cards, and following the Big 10 football and basketball teams. She attended many games and of course was an avid Packers fan.

They grew from children into adulthood where they navigated together in all ways from one side of the continent to the other. Lance was known for saying that Brooke pulled him out of his comfort zone, and he did the same for her. Exploring their surroundings was something they enjoyed whether that be fishing for salmon on the Russian River in Cooper’s Landing, AK to hiking mountains in both Alaska and North Carolina and any adventure in between. Lance loved their dogs Piper and Max, cheese curds from the Cady Cheese Factory and especially Italian food. We will always remember his unforgettable smile.
