ELMWOOD, WI – The Village of Elmwood held their October monthly board meeting on Monday, October 9, 2023, at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall at the historic Elmwood Auditorium. The meeting was called to order with all board members present.

During the meeting, one topic of interest was the request by Celect communications for the board to pledge funds toward expansion of fiber optic into the village. The company requested that they pledge a portion of funds that would be then indicated in a grant to facilitate the beginning of running the fiber optic lines. A request by the board was made for an indication of subscriber rates and at the time of the meeting, none was given. Without that number notated, the board agreed that they would waive right of way fees pending a quote of service rates as opposed to a pledged amount.

Next, a motion was made for the village to participate in a complex survey of sewer and water rates. This is required to re-evaluate the water and sewage rates that community members are currently paying. Following the survey, the village would then be able to adjust water/sewer rates to edge towards fees being able to maintain the cost of the sewer plant. Currently the cost of maintaining the plant far exceeds the revenue from the fees.

BALDWIN, WI – Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) is excited to announce that the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF) has awarded them with the DCF Partner Up! Grant.

The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF) launched ‘Project Growth in 2022’. This program is designed to help Wisconsin businesses, communities, and early childhood education partners find solutions to ensure a high-quality workforce in Wisconsin. Under this umbrella of DCF programming, a focus on childcare was developed.

This program is known as ‘Partner Up!’ and to date, it has provided $26 million in funding to support businesses in securing childcare at regulated, licensed childcare programs in Wisconsin. Under this program, the true cost of care, which includes developmentally appropriate, safe and reliable childcare, is compensated by a combination of business contributions, DCF contribution, and in some cases, parent contribution. Contracted providers receive the full monthly true cost of care, as determined by DCF, for contracted slots.

At Western Wisconsin Health (WWH), our goal is to serve as a choice employer. WWH is the proud recipient of the Partner Up! Grant. Reducing the financial barriers, such as those that are required for the cost of childcare, eases the burden faced by healthcare professionals.

The DCF Partner Up! Grant program awarded WWH 42 childcare slots for 26 staff members with 65% paid by DCF, 25% paid by WWH and 10% paid by the staff member over the next year. “This incredible offering will provide staff the opportunity to save over the next year on childcare costs and will also keep WWH’s workforce consistent,” said Erin Benson, Director of Human Resources.

Blackhawk football defeats Amery in a ‘Mud Bowl’

0

AMERY, WI – Fall weather is officially here. The Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks finished the 2023 regular season with a wet and muddy win over the Amery Warriors, 22-20. Both teams battled through soaking rain and muddy field conditions.

Amery kicked off to Baldwin-Woodville to begin the game. The Blackhawks moved downfield on their first possession, mainly on the ground and short-quick passes, leading to a 16-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Cal Smith to Taden Holldorf. Cal Smith ran into the endzone for a successful two-point conversion, 8-0.

Amery’s first possession was short-lived. The Warriors fumbled the ball on the second play of their first offensive drive. Blackhawk defensive end Collin Fritts recovered the fumble. Graiden Monicken took over quarterback duties for Cal Smith and the Blackhawks midway through Baldwin-Woodville’s second offensive drive. Monicken took over the Blackhawk offense in a second-and-goal situation on Amery’s 1-yardline. However, the Blackhawks were unable to punch the ball into the endzone for a touchdown and turned the ball over to the Warriors on downs. Amery went four-and-out and was forced to punt.

SPRING VALLEY, WI – This game lived up to the hype coming into it all season long, and while the Cardinals came out on the short end of the scoreboard, everything was left on the muddy, wet field here last Friday night.

The visiting Boyceville Bulldogs took advantage of a few bigger plays and earned the 26-6 win over the Cardinals and the right to call themselves the D-SC Conference Champions, something the Cardinals have held the past three years with Boyceville holding second place all three years.

When the game came to an end, the sportsmanship on the field was extraordinary to see as both teams congratulated each other on a good game and great seasons for each squad.

The Spring Valley volleyball team went undefeated in conference play this year to win the Dunn-St. Croix Conference title. The Cardinals beat Boyceville at home, 3-0, last Thursday to win the title outright. Submitted photo

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Coming into play last week the Spring Valley volleyball team had a goal in sight – win their last two games and win the conference. The team took care of business on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Elmwood-Plum City (E-PC) on the road and secured an undefeated conference season with a three-game sweep of Boyceville here last Thursday for their first conference title in, well, in a long time.

The wins improved the Cardinals to 21-7 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. It also secured some home-court advantage for at least the first two rounds of the WIAA playoffs.

Valley hosted Blair-Taylor this past Tuesday night as they earned the #4 seed in the region. If they beat #13 seeded Wildcats (5-4 Dairyland, 9-12 overall) they will host either #5 seeded Regis or #12 seeded Osseo-Fairchild tonight in Spring Valley at 7:00 p.m. This is the time of year that records go away, and everyone starts with a clean slate. The winner of the match on Thursday would play on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at a location to be determined by who is advancing (#1 seeded McDonell Central has a first-round bye and will play the winner of the #8 Mondovi and #9 Colfax match on Thursday night).
