Volleyball tops Mondovi with Stein notching landmark dig, Durand Thursday

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – While it’s early in the conference schedule, the Spring Valley volleyball team continues showing that they do not plan on just giving up the D-SC title easily.

The Cardinals topped a tough Mondovi team here last Tuesday with a commanding 3-0 win. The Cardinals fell behind at times in some of the games to the Buffaloes, but solid defense, a secure attack and just a core belief propelled the Cardinals to victory.

Valley topped Mondovi by scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-15, and during the match senior Bella Stein notched her historic 1,000th defensive dig in leading the defense and team. Stein had 23 digs in the match while Ella Stangl and Addison Nelson had 13 and 11 each to help the cause as the team combined for 62 digs behind Stein’s leadership in the win.

BELDENVILLE, WI – Are there many people left in the area who still like to eat lutefisk?

The number is probably decreasing but, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Beldenville area still wants to provide lutefisk for those fish lovers out there. Their tradition is in their 76th year of providing a typical Scandinavian dinner of lutefisk, riced potatoes with meatballs and gravy, potato lefse, coleslaw salad, grøt pudding, and Norwegian cookies like krumkake and sandbakkels.

Gone are the days when the church served 1500 people. They are limiting tickets sold now to 480. The church has gone computerized, requiring reservations online. Reservation times are from 2-6:30 found on a link on their website: oursaviorschurch.info.

The date is always the fourth Thursday in October which is the 24 this year. The price is $20 for adults and $12 for teens and $7 child.  The price has remained the same as last year.

WARRENS, WI – Hey Woodville! This past weekend, Sunday September 29,2024, the 2024-2025 Syttende Mai Royal Court (Princesses Jessica Albers, Addisyn Wichelman, and Adeline Haugen) and I traveled to Warrens for their 51st Annual Cranberry Festival!

On the drive down, we got to watch many heads turn in other cars to look at our imposing Dragon float.

When we arrived in Warrens, we went to the Queen’s Tea, where we got to hand out many of our 2024 Syttende Mai buttons to the Sparkle Sister Courts we haven’t met before. We even got to meet the Westby Syttende Mai Court! We enjoyed talking for a while and compared our bunads (traditional Norwegian outfits). We took a picture with them. It was fun to meet another Syttende Mai Royalty Court!

Warrens is host to the World’s Largest Cranberry Festival and 2024 marks the 51st Annual Celebration. Founded in 1973, the Village of Warrens with a population of 543, welcomes more than 145,000 visitors. The Cranberry Festival draws people from around the world.

We walked along the shops in Warrens after the 51st Annual Cranberry Festival Parade and saw lots of cute crafts. We tried some cranberry saltwater taffy, which was really good. It was a great parade to end our season on, and I would like to thank everyone who has shown us their love and support for us!

In October, we will be at the Anoka Halloween Festival in Minnesota, “the Halloween Capital of the World!”

8th ranked Cardinals blank Cadott, hosting E-PC for homecoming Friday

CADOTT, WI – Coming out of last week’s win over Cadott relatively unscathed was a big point of emphasis for the Cardinals. The match-up with the Hornets has often been brutal for both teams in recent years and has often had an impact on the conference title. This year, however, Cadott is not in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference as they made the jump to the Lakeland Conference – but that hasn’t diminished the smash-mouth football game this has lived up to become.

This year, the Cardinals came into the game ranked eighth in the state in division seven with an undefeated record of 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference action. The Hornets are 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the Lakeland with a relatively young team (four seniors only on the team).

The Cardinals opened the game defensively with an interception and scored just two plays later on a weaving sweep of a run by senior quarterback Cade Stasiek. The extra point kick by sophomore Isaac Koenig was good, giving Valley a 7-0 lead with 7:58 left in the first quarter.

Crystal Cave Tour Guide Reunion a blast from the past

The Crystal Cave Tour Guide Reunion was attended by over thirty former employees from 1953-2012. Photo by Julie Ducklow

SPRING VALLEY, WI – Despite the morning rain, Saturday, September 21, 2024, was a beautiful day for a reunion. Over 30 people showed up to share stories, memories, and laughter about their time working at one of the area’s biggest attractions – Crystal Cave.

The event, sponsored by the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce and graciously hosted in the picnic area at Crystal Cave by the current owners, Eric and Kristin McMaster, featured former employees from as far back as 1953, and from as recently as 2012.

From the collective stories told by former Cave tour guides, many were able to put the pieces together of a full tour. Some of the visitors worked for the original owners of Crystal Cave, the Friedes. Henry Friede, who is credited with commercializing the Cave, began the process of clearing the Cave of silt and debris in 1941. Following the original clearing of the first two levels, a building, (now the gift shop) entrance, and stairways were constructed to reach the first three levels of the Cave. The grand opening was set for May 29 and 30 of 1942 but was delayed until June 7 due to massive flooding in the Spring Valley area.

Ronald Donath

0

Ronald Donath, age 73, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, passed away at his home in Gilman Township on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Ron was born March 7, 1951, to Fredrick and Adeline (Bauer) Donath in St. Paul, Minnesota. He grew up in the Clear Lake area and attended Clear Lake Schools, graduating with the Class of 1969.

On July 31, 1970, Ron married Coleen Schramski in Centuria, WI. They started their family in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, before making the Spring Valley area their home in 1975.

Ron was a builder, working with his hands all his life as an auto body repair person and then as a welder at the Shipyard in St Paul and Donaldson Company in Baldwin. He took great pride in the things he built and enjoyed caring for his horses, but his greatest love was for his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren who he would patiently listen to and could always make laugh.

He taught his children and their children so many things by example – loving through actions, bluntness, playfulness, humor and wit, can-do stubbornness, quiet strength, and humility. He loved and cared for Coleen with everything he had. His smile, laughter, and comforting presence is deeply missed by all.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Mike and Fred.

Survivors include his wife Coleen; children: Michele (Eric) Huppert; Bridget Johnson; Brenda (Brandon) Johnson; and Jeremy (Emily) Donath; grandchildren: Christien (Nicole) Huppert; Sedrick (Patrick) Huppert; Brittany (Raj) Bohini; Katelyn Christiansen; Jonah and Jaden Johnson; Adia Johnson; Dominic, Dakota, Dalton, and Cloe Donath; and great grandchildren: Aria, Tristan, Phoenix, Kiana, Raina; sister Debra (Kent) Donath; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends.

We take great comfort in the fact that although Ron was a man of few emotional words, whenever a family member would tell him we loved him, he would reply, “I know that.” Dad and Grandpa Ron may your spirit be unburdened and ride free on heavenly horses until your family rejoins you.

A Celebration of Life was on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley, Wisconsin.

James Houdek

James Houdek, age 85, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. Amazingly, September 18th is the Feast Day for the patron saint of aviators and pilots, Saint Joseph of Cupertino.

James Dean Houdek was born December 19, 1938, to James C. and Marie ‘Mae’ Sedlak Houdek in Crete, Nebraska. He grew up farming with his family in rural southeast Nebraska.  During his senior year he moved to Columbus, Nebraska. He graduated from Columbus High School with the Class of 1956. After high school he continued his education at the University of Omaha where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

On February 2, 1963, he married Edith ‘Dede’ Coughenour, his college sweetheart, in Omaha, Nebraska. After he graduated, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 until 1969.  He flew the KC-135 Tanker during the Vietnam War. By the end of his tour of duty, he and Dede had four children. He then was hired as a commercial pilot by Northwest Airlines and moved with his family to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Within a year the airline industry began laying off pilots, and Jim along with many other newly hired pilots lost his job. He convinced Northwest to hire him back as an accountant, and he worked in the corporate offices for eight years. In 1980 Jim very happily returned to flying, and he, Dede, and their now eight children made Spring Valley their home. The family became enthusiastic and involved members of the community. Jim retired from Northwest on his 60th birthday in 1998.

After 45 years of marriage, he lost his wife Dede on November 6, 2008.

Jim later met Bonnie Baker, and they were married on November 27, 2010. They divided their time between their Florida and Wisconsin homes. Jim and Bonnie enjoyed traveling, visiting family, going on cruises, and working in their garden.

Jim was known for his selfless generosity throughout his life. He was actively involved in his community whether it was rebuilding a church, being President of the Village Board, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, being a member of the Lion’s Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion, or helping with the many projects within his own family and the Village. He was honored to be Grand Marshall of the 2023 Dam Days Grande Parade.

Some of Jim’s favorite things to do were attending his kids’ and grandkids’ activities, marching in the famous and talented El Paso Marching band, gardening, entertaining family and friends, and playing tennis. Jim was an avid tennis player and found tennis partners worldwide wherever he flew. One of his proudest accomplishments was starting the annual Northwest Airlines tennis tournament. He ran this tournament for many years. It is now the Delta Airlines Tennis tournament, and he is recognized as the founding father.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Mae Houdek; wife Dede; siblings Arnold Houdek and Aldeane Horning; father-in-law and mother-in-law Kenneth and Marian Coughenour; and sister-in-law Ann Coughenour.

Jim is survived by his wife Bonnie, his sister Jeanne (Gerald) Lauenroth, his children: Elizabeth (Gregg) Deutsch, James ‘Chip’ (Jaime) Houdek, Catherine (Royce) Keehr, John (Laurie) Houdek, Laura (Scott) Kish, Karen (Bill) Fesenmaier, Debra (Craig) Jilek, and Cynthia (Shawn) Harrison. He is also survived by stepchildren Scott Bullard and Jackie (Glenn) Graham and 25 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday, September 23, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley.  A mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, September 23, 2024, at 11a.m.  Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Spring Valley.

Honorary pallbearers were James K. ‘Chip’ Houdek, John Houdek, and Scott Bullard.  Pallbearers were Jim’s sons-in-law: Gregg Deutsch, Royce Keehr, Scott Kish, Bill Fesenmaier, Craig Jilek, and Shawn Harrison.
