Share the road as farmers begin planting season

0

Submitted by Wis-DOT

MADISON, WI – As farmers prepare for spring planting season, the Wisconsin State Patrol reminds drivers and farm vehicle operators to be safe, patient and share the road.

Spring is a busy time of year for farmers and drivers can expect to see more farm vehicles on the road. Safety on our roads requires everyone to do their part. There have been more than 2,000 crashes involving farm vehicles in Wisconsin in the past five years, including a preliminary report of 388 in 2023.

“Farmers are out working hard to feed our communities,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan. “Their equipment is often slower, less agile and much larger than a standard vehicle. It’s important that drivers and equipment operators keep an eye out for each other and understand their responsibility in safely sharing the road.”

Driver responsibilities

  • Scan the road ahead and be ready to slow down when you see slow-moving farm vehicles.
  • Provide extra room for farm vehicles and anticipate the possibility they may slow down or turn.
  • Be patient and cautious if you decide to pass. In Wisconsin, it is unlawful to pass an agricultural vehicle in a no passing zone.
  • When legally passing, consider the possibility of the farmer turning left onto a road, driveway or field entrance.

Farm vehicle operator responsibilities

  • Know the lighting and marking requirements for farm vehicles. These requirements draw attention to the unique size, shape and speed of agriculture vehicles and alert other drivers that caution is required.
  • When traveling on a road, stay as far to the right as safely possible.
  • Be familiar with road weight restrictions. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection provides a statewide map with information about weight limits.
  • Review information about permits, exemptions and weight limits on the WisDOT website.

Baseball team splits opening week with win and loss to conference foes

0

SPRING VALLEY, WI – You know it’s spring in Wisconsin when you break out the winter gear to go watch a baseball game. At least for a few games.

The Spring Valley baseball team opened their 2024 campaign with a pair of Dunn-St. Croix conference games last week, which they split. The loss and win puts Valley at 1-1 on the season and in the conference with games at Colfax this past Monday, at Glenwood City today (Thursday) and home against non-conference foe Somerset tomorrow. Next week the Cardinals host Durand on Monday, April 15, at home and follow it up with a game against Elk Mound on Thursday – also at home.

Boyceville 8, Spring Valley 1 – The Bulldogs wanted to establish their home field right away, and Valley struggled on the mound to begin with – two things that didn’t bode well for a Cardinal victory.

ST CROIX COUNTY, WI – To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $45,959 contract with prime contractor Mattison Contractors, Inc. of Knapp for a safety improvement project on northbound WIS 128 just north of the westbound I-94 entrance and exit ramps southwest of Wilson in St. Croix County. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, April 15, 2024

To prevent illegal U-turns and reduce crashes from southbound WIS 128 traffic exiting at the south entrance to a convenience store (Kwik Trip), the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Reconstruct the south entrance to the convenience store from northbound WIS 128 to allow only right-turning motorists to enter there.
    • All exiting traffic from the business will be directed to use the store’s northern driveway.

During construction, WIS 128 will remain open to traffic, but the south entrance to the store will be closed until work is completed.

Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of April, but the project’s start and completion dates are weather dependent.

ELMWOOD, WI – On Saturday, March 30, 2024, sixty-seven children and their families gathered for the Annual Elmwood Easter Egg Hunt presented for the delight of the area children and their families by the hardworking Elmwood Community Club.

The exciting Egg Hunt was held upstairs in the historic Elmwood Auditorium. Over 2,000 brightly colored plastic eggs were placed across the auditorium floor as the kids excitedly lined up for the opportunity to win the candy-filled eggs. Elmwood’s resident Easter Bunny (Josh Bleskacek) was on site for photos during the event.

In addition to all the candy filled eggs, there were also fourteen door prizes given away including various Easter baskets, adorable stuffed animals, and even more candy. The age categories for the bikes were 0-4 boys, 0-4 girls, 5-8 boys, 5-8 girls, 9 and over boys and 9 and over girls. The bike winners were drawn first, and anyone who didn’t win a bike was still eligible for a door prize.
