Roxanne Kay Grinnell was born May 5, 1960 to Rexford and Evelyn (Olson) Grinnell.

Her resilience in the face of adversity was truly inspiring; despite the many challenges she faced after her stroke, her determination remained unwavering, serving as a testament to her remarkable strength.

Roxie’s affinity for nature, particularly birds and flowers, was profound. Her giving heart left an indelible mark on those around her. Whether it was her renowned peanut brittle during the holidays or her thoughtful gestures like tending to the cemetery plants and always having dog treats on hand, Roxie epitomized the essence of generosity.

Above all, Roxie held her role as a grandmother in the highest regard. Her granddaughters brought her immense pride and joy. She eagerly participated in their events, cherishing every opportunity to be a part of their lives. The tradition of sending cards for all Holidays to them will be a cherished memory for years to come. Her bond with her cat, Whitey, added warmth and companionship to her days. Active in a stroke survivor’s group, Roxie relished the camaraderie and shared experiences. She found joy in simple pleasures like shopping and dining out with friends whenever possible.

Ellen Zimmer

0

Ellen Marie Zimmer was born on September 18, 1955, and passed away peacefully on March 10, 2024, at 68 years old. She was raised in and graduated from high school in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor, and community advocate. We will miss her quiet warmth, thoughtfulness, strength, and selfless kindness.

Ellen was tenacious in her pursuit of her educational goals and a full, vibrant, meaningful life. She approached setbacks as challenges to be overcome and experiences that informed her compassion for others. An open and curious person, she sought connection and community with people from diverse walks of life. She completed her MS in Safety Management and her PsyD in Health and Wellness Psychology – the culmination of a lifetime spent pursuing positive health, integrating mind, body, spirit, and emotional well-being.

Her intellectual interests were always in service to others, with a heart that saw and wanted to help underserved populations.  She volunteered in a local hospital, worked with adults with disabilities, tutored math, and led community qigong classes. More recently, she served as a community steward through the TLC Center and, separately, the Aging & Disability Resource Center, coordinating volunteers, food pantry, and nutrition programs, amongst other things. She cared deeply for the people she served and gained valuable friendships along the way.

She will be remembered as a creative and talented home chef, something she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her recipes often combined international flavors, with locally sourced ingredients; they were as nutritious as they were delicious. Many friends and family members have tried to duplicate their favorites, but Ellen had a special touch. Quilting was another of her creative outlets. She took great care in every step of the process, carefully selecting fabrics and patterns. She continued to sew clothing for herself and her family. In her free time, she often enjoyed being in nature and exploring.

Her children are so grateful for her fierce advocacy, her pragmatic and principled approach to life, and her resilience. They are also grateful for her hopefulness, for encouraging their interdependence, and for all the ways she made their worlds bigger.

She is survived by her children (from her marriage to Delmer Blegen) – Sara, Brent, and Alicia Blegen – and her three grandchildren: Marit and Silje Blegen (Shana Weiss) and Simon Kindvall (Matthew Kindvall), as well as her siblings: David, Paul, Dean (Sandra), John (Lauren), Barry (Deb), Roger (Diane), Tony (Kim), Nancy (William), Rhonda (Bruce), and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Mary Zimmer and her sister, Jean Vance.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 515 Main Street, Holmen, Wisconsin. Fr Jim Weighner will officiate. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

SPRING VALLEY, WI – The Spring Valley High School Drama department is ready for their Spring play Parents Just Don’t Understand a comedy by Bryan Starchaman. April 5 and April 6 at 7:00, April 7 at 2:00.

The hip-hop standard of the 1980’s said it best “There’s no need to argue, parents just don’t understand!” This is a lighthearted look at a “Greatest hit list” of classic family moments.

There have been many laughs during practices about family events that you as an audience will also enjoy and relate to.

This light-hearted collection of vignettes will remind you of holidays and birthdays with family. Or perhaps when Dad tried to teach you to drive or Mom decided that she would pick out your wardrobe, we’ve all been there! Or maybe you recall those family vacations when you were stuck in the backseat for hours with your annoying sibling(s), heading for a camping trip. Or maybe you even call to mind… the talk; yes, that talk.

We hope to see you at the theatre on either Friday, April 5, Saturday, April 6 at 7:00 or Sunday, April 7 at 2:00.

Performances at Stagehand Theatre on Mckay Ave. Spring Valley. Tickets at the door.

MADISON, WI – Storms can develop quickly in Wisconsin, and knowing what to do when a severe weather warning is issued can help keep you and others safe. To help encourage everyone to be prepared for tornadoes, thunderstorms and flooding, Wisconsin observes April 8-12 as Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, along with holding statewide tornado drills on April 11, 2024. Be informed. Plan ahead. Take action.

“Wisconsin made history this year when two tornadoes touched down in early February, which were the first confirmed tornadoes in the state during that month since record keeping began,” said Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle. “Tornadoes and severe weather can develop at any time, which is why we are asking everyone to take a few minutes during Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week to review their emergency plans and identify where the nearest safe place to take shelter is located.”

Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually. In 2023, the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed 21 tornadoes in the state. That includes 15 tornadoes that touched down in a single day, when storms moved across southern Wisconsin on March 31 of last year.

To stay safe during severe weather, ReadyWisconsin encourages people to do the following:

  • Create an emergency plan and practice it.
  • Know where designated shelters are located at home, work, and school. Be ready to go there when a tornado warning is issued.
  • Have multiple ways to receive alerts about approaching severe weather. Outdoor warning sirens, NOAA Weather Radios, local media, and mobile devices are all important tools. Don’t rely on any single source for important life-saving information.
  • If you have a mobile device, make sure it is enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). On many devices, that option is available in the settings menu. Find out more about WEA at readywisconsin.wi.gov/be-informed/be-alert/.
  • Stay weather aware by checking the daily forecast for your area.
  • Create an emergency kit for your home. Find tips for making a kit at readywisconsin.wi.gov.

Wisconsin’s annual statewide tornado drills will take place on April 11 at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., offering an opportunity to practice your tornado sheltering plans. Schools, businesses, and homes are encouraged to practice going to their nearest tornado shelter during the drills, as if there were an actual tornado warning in effect. Ideal tornado shelters can include a basement, a ground floor interior room of a building, or a specially constructed safe room designed to withstand high winds and falling debris.

During the drill times, Wisconsin’s NWS offices will conduct NOAA Weather Radio tests that can be heard if you are actively listening to those devices or have one programmed to activate on test alerts. Local media outlets may also participate on the air or over social media. Some communities may also choose to test their outdoor warning sirens during the drill times. Check with local emergency management offices for information on siren testing schedules.

If there is a threat of severe weather in Wisconsin on April 11, the statewide drills will be postponed until Friday, April 12. The drills will go on in all other conditions, including non-severe weather (clouds, rain, dark sky, scattered thunderstorms, etc.). If severe weather is also expected on Friday, the drills will be cancelled. Notification of the drill status will be posted at readywisconsin.wi.gov by 10 a.m. on the morning of April 11.

“Staying safe from severe weather is everyone’s responsibility,” Engle said. “Spending just a few minutes this week participating in tornado drills could save your life by helping you know how get to safety faster if a real warning is issued later on.”
